I was listening to some music yesterday and the sound suddenly went.

I checked the settings etc, and everything was normal, the sound was on but there wasn't any!

It's doing my flippin' head in...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

update the driver for your soundcard.

start
control panel
sounds and audio devices
go to hardware
click on yur card eg: realtek ac97 audio
click driver
update driver
follow instructions

Also, try putting some headphones in, see if that works. I lost my sound but when i tried that it worked.

I ended up buying some external speakers.

things to check

the codec is enabled in the bios
the windows audio service is running
the master volume is set ok, and not muted. same for the 'wave' volume
the device is selected for playback

wait... there's a troubleshooter for all this (except the bios setting)

control panel > sound and audio > hardware tab > select the audio device (realtek or AC97 or whatever) > troubleshoot

good luck

I can't get anything like that up mate.

All I get is "change sound card settings" which when clicked on tells me that the speakers work and that everything's fine. The settings are limited to useless things like changing individual sounds to your preferences.

I can't get anything up like your directions.

Nothing, no result.

It's telling me everything's fine.

I think it's worth noting that I took the laptop apart a few days ago. The socket on the laptop for the charger had been pushed inside the console, which meant I couldn't charge the laptop. So I took it apart, fixed it and then all was fine...

Until around 24 hours later when the sound died, in the blink of an eye while I was listening to some music.

What should I do?

:(

Thanks for all the help.

ok, at the bottom right of your screen to the left of your clock, check the volume is not muted or turned down, also check your media player which you use to play your music (mp3's) through.

Make sure your speakers or headphones are properly connected to the laptop via the line out (green jack point)

If all is normal then click on

start menu
control panel
classic view, on the left
Sound

is your playback device picking up a signal when music is played?

Yeah, you can see that it recognises the music is playing...

Yet there is no sound.
