Laptops

Don't get a Mac; if he's doing computer science he'll most likely be using the best os in the world (Linux :P) and won't need to be spending that much

What exactly is his budget mate :)

I'm currently planning to spend around 900 bucks and change on one. Jeez. I didn't out this much time into buying my f-cking car!

first question is what course is he doing, is it something that requires a lot of computer power? that 256gb ssd will be eaten up very quickily if you ask me probably better with a decent wd hybrid type with 128gb ssd and a 1tb hhd that which be far cheaper

The cloud man the cloud

Then he has a better excuse of having to go to the pub coz the internets better than the sh!te in digs

i7, 16GB* RAM, 500GB SSD - see if you can find something within the budget. When he starts moaning about the BIOS then you'll know he has learnt something.

*Anyone offering 8GB RAM is offloading old stock.

btw I don't get the hate for Macs, they run BSD UNIX ffs! OK, they are expensive but built like a brick shithouse

I cannot comment on where to buy, but I bought a couple of Dell XPS 13's for my business. They are superb laptops, well built, solid state - so they are rapid and the battery lasts all day. I think all the XPS models are highly rated, but the XPS 13 seems to appear at the top of most best buy guides. I know this isn't helping the OP find an outlet to purchase from but I bought mine directly from Dell at just under £1000 each. At this cost I feel more secure buying direct just for the support I can get from Dell.

So I have two kids one who has just finished a law degree and the other doing a maths degree. Both used my old MacBooks which they got when I upgraded. Both machines are more than adequate. The maths daughter runs Linux on hers as well as OSX.
There is nothing wrong with Macs!

Almost all the ones I'm looking for now are 8 gigs! WTF Do you have to do to find a decent laptop for under a grand?!

I've seen machines advertised recently with 32 and even 64GB RAM, yes, they are expensive.

I should have been a little more clear with what I was saying, 8GB is OK if the machine has expansion capabilities to 16GB or more, but if it's 8GB and no more then leave it alone.

Yeah. I almost bought a Lenovo but I like to and their keyboards suck. And I almost got a Dell but the display was crappy. I need to find a good US site to find affordable but durable laptops. Best Buy and Amazon are probably my best bets.

The worst things about my Lenovo are the keyboard and the mouse buttons, however, I put that down to having had one screw left over when I reassembled the machine, I can't be arsed taking the bugger apart again ;)
