Watched 7 films recently, they might look random but I'm working through a list (instead of spending hours on streaming platforms deciding what to watch).
Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother (1975) - 1/10
A crap slapstick comedy starring Gene Wilder, it was his directing debut. Wilder plays the smarter brother, who I think is supposed to be smart whilst acting like an idiot. I just couldn't get into it, it tries too hard to be funny, even for a slapstick.
Outland (1981) - 4/10
Sean Connery as a marshal of a mining colony on one of Jupiter's moons, who has to work out why bodies keep showing up. The CGI is terrible and hasn't held up well at all, which might be an unfair criticism but the film isn't great. Just one of them where they probably spent all the budget on the lead actor.
Shane (1953) - 4/10
A western set in Wyoming sometime after the Civil War, mainly centred around farmers wanting their land and bandits wanting to roam freely on said land. It won an Oscar for cinematography. It felt like the whole film dragged on, 2 hours long but it felt longer. I'm not a massive fan of westerns so I'm not the target audience for this one. I can appreciate that it was probably a good film for the time. I thought Alan Ladd was good in it.
The Great Waldo Pepper (1975) - 6/10
A comedy drama starring Robert Redford based on flying in the 1920's, just as flying was starting to become commercialised. I kind of enjoyed this one, enough going on to retain my attention. Some of the accident scenes are just dumb though.
Breaking Away (1979) - 8/10
A coming-of-age film centred around 4 lads growing up in a university town, one of which is a young Dennis Quaid. It's mainly centred around one of lads who wants to become a professional cyclist and loves the Tour de France and Team Cinzano. Brilliant film, I hadn't realised how revered it was until after I'd watched it, it won the Oscar best original screenplay. I'd watch it again.
Barry Lyndon (1975) - 7/10
Stanley Kubrick directed period drama set in the 1700's about a guy from Ireland basically travelling through Europe via war and climbing the social ladder at the same time. It won 4 Oscars actually. It starts off strong, the first act is good, however it gets progressively worse throughout second act. Still a strong enough film, it's fucking long though (3hours 10mins) but there is an intermission, so I watched it in 2 sittings.
Taking Care of Business (1990) - 4/10
I think it was actually released under the name Filofax in the UK. Just a typical 90's comedy starring Jim (James Beluschi) from According to Jim who plays a guy called Jimmy. I assume he forgets his name if he takes a different character name? It starts off pretty shit and gets progressively better but only good enough to be called a bang average film.
