Last Film You Saw

Watch Side Effects and Underwater recently.
The former is well recommended, nice twisty story where as a viewer you’re never quite sure of your footing. I would suggest not reading online anything about it, try just watching it ‘cold’. Apparently Soderbergh said it was gonna be his last film. It’s on Sky Movies at the mo.

Underwater was absolutely average, with an unhealthy obsession with featuring as many shots of lead Kristen Stewart wearing as little as possible, throughout a claustrophobic story set on a mining station at the foot of the world’s deepest ocean trench. Strange things afoot. Now where have we seen a set up like that before..?
Tbf, an ideal set up to make a movie during lockdown, but nevertheless, the finished product not that great.

Danger Close on Netflix, based on a true story set during the Vietnam war, Australian/ New Zealand soldiers. Watch the credits till the end for the " roll of honour"... heartbreaking.....8/10

Saw Dune by streaming it. I like the book and the 80's film version for different reasons. The book conveys the flawed and cruel messiah perfectly, and the film was all style, soft filter, and glitter. I had low expectation for this film. The director's Arrival was spectacular, and his Blade Runner film was terribly disappointing. It is difficult to tell whether his output is generally uneven, or trying to get Ford on screen needlessly had hampered his effort.

This film, I thought, strikes the balance between the grittiness of a desert war and the ridiculousness of a space opera. The visuals are beautiful. Ferguson does her usual great work. The messiah is portrayed by an actually youngish looking actor. I would imagine this is how a war would look like when an empire goes to die in Afghanistan in 100 years.

This was a great antidote for the s*** show of the past week.

Moonrise Kingdom

Edward Norton and a host of big names.
Excellent film, I really enjoyed it, so different to the shite they make these days.
Loved the Benjamin Britten music played near the end.
