Max
Schmeling, he never owned Cafe Schiller and they certainly didn't name the street after him.
The cafe was started by Hans Fretz, now also sadly deceased. He was a collector of sports memorabilia and his collection is still on display (that's him on the left of the photo in the top left hand corner if you click on the link).
Funnily enough even though he had nothing to do with Cafe Schiller Schmeling was a German paratrooper in the war like City old boy Bernd "Bert" Trautmann.
It is right on the edge of the expensive red light district near Sendlinger Tor.
I've been going in there since it opened in 1989, it's a couple of minutes walk from the station and very handy for a beer or two while waiting for the train back home after home games.

Last time i was in Munich beer was something like arm and a leg....bad memories of that...so prepare for worst
Depends where you go. Schwabing and the bierfest/bierkellers are expensive. Get off the underground somewhere out of the centre and find some quiet local bar and you will get decent prices and probably better beer.
Bavarians won't drink crap, if you find a bar full of locals the beer will be good.
