Laurence Fox launches political party

I’m not so sure about that. These sorts of things are always just a big-mouthed noisy minority and are rarely a large proportion. And that sort of attitude does the older generation a disservice as it paints them in a false light.

Where people grew up in areas like inner-city Manchester where a lot of Jamaican and Asian immigrants moved to, most people weren’t bothered by different races. Many white people here were from Irish and Polish descent and were from immigrant families themselves.

The way some 60s mods changed when they merged with Jamaican rude boys and became the original skinheads was a racial coming together, soul boys adopting underground black American soul music and drive the Northern Soul scene (and in London the same thing happened but with funk and disco rather than soul)… up to the Two-tone movement of the 70s… the racially diverse support of the likes of City, Villa and Brum back in the day…
That is a superb post, chapeau.

I think back to my sadly departed mum though, born in Wythenshawe in the 30s to parents from Gorton and Openshaw, she spent most of her life in Cheadle where to be honest it was rare to see a face that was not white. As she got to the end of her life, she was 87, some of the things she said could be construed as racist, but my mum was not racist, she had Nigerian neighbours and loved the little boys and would happily chat with the neighbours over the fence but when in hospital she said some awful things about the coloured nursing staff and doctors. Thankfully the staff laughed it off and maybe it was because she delerious she said such things.

It is easy to say old people are racist, but like you say it is not inherent, it is manufactured, its manufactured by the likes of the Daily Mail who scare elder people who live in a world they never envisaged. I was in hospital one time with a lovely old white fella, he was in his 80s and I did the ward paper round, he used to get the Mail and we would speak about articles in it and i would calmly point out that they were fucking bullshit, he began to see that as we were in hospital together for nearly 2 months. Without me pointing it out to him, he would have believed the poison they spread and he was a lovely old fella.
