He was probably always mental tbh. He made a good point of rejecting the writers of Lewis trying to make his character homosexual, when most actors would have rolled with it as a challenge.
It's worth mentioning he was expelled from Harrow and his headmaster wrote to every university to warn them against giving him a place.
His dad also had a midlife mental breakdown when he found god and became born again.
I heard or read somewhere that playing a gangster in the Nic Roeg movie Performance was what pushed his dad over the edge.
That’s a great film for anyone who hasn’t seen it. The elder Fox is superb in it. It also inspired the Happy Mondays songs ‘Mad Cyril’ and ‘Performance’.
The evangelical Christianity thing would also account for ‘Lozza’s friendship with the equally charmless and repellent Fr. Calvin Robinson.
Thought that Fox got expelled for bullying. It must have been particularly vicious for the Headmaster to warn off the Universities about him.
