Leader of EDL refused service in Selfridges

ok i am going to stop doing business with Jews,i've been ripped off that much by them i don't want to work for them any more,you are correct though we do not live in a democratic country at all,we all get told what to do and how to live our lives or suffer the consequences

If you live in a democratic country it should be your absolute right as a private business to serve or refuse to serve who you want. Public services should serve anyone regardless of belief. In this case, Selfridges are within their rights to serve him, and would equally within their rights not to do so. A business should not be compelled to serve anyone in a free country. However, none of these issues are at stake here, because the guy who refused to serve was not the guy running the business, ergo, it's nothing to do with democracy. However, a free country would have been more apt a word. Democracies are not necessarily free. Democracy can be a very dangerous idea if it isn't combined with strong liberty for the individual.

Having worked in pubs i was totally within my rights to refuse service to anybody i didnt like the look of.

If the EDL came in the pub i worked at i as a barman would have refused to serve them and banned them too

what would you have done though rascal if your boss insisted that anyone can buy a drink in his pub regardless of their political beliefs?

As far as i understood it, he had no lawful right over who i served or not.

In ten years of working in pubs through my student years etc i was never once qustioned by any boss as to why i refused service.

If my boss had insisted i would have walked out. But my bosses trusted me i like to think as bosses should with all employees.

this has been my argument in this topic rasc. I,m not going to defend the shop assistant and I,m certainly not going to defend Robinson. I used to deliver plant and was given a job by my rag boss to take a digger and dumper to the scums' training ground. If l,d have refused to do it, l,d have been sacked. As far as l,m concerned, this lad is a hypocrite. He won't serve a racist but he,s more than happy to accept money off someone who opens their doors to one.

I have said before I think there is too much immigration in this country and as ever you gets tonnes of abuse for that from the left wing posters. However I think the lad was in his rights to say I won't serve you. If he thinks the guy is too extreme and a bit of a dick and dare I say en extreme racist then fair play to him for not serving him.

I think selfridges should just have said this guy thinks you are a twat so we will get someone else to serve you. They should not have bought him a meal etc.

Common sense should prevail in all instances.

As usual the thread gets hijacked by idiots from all sides, the bottom line is this, he refused to do the job he's paid to do, which is no doubt against the terms of his employment, he got suspended now rescinded , the customers were compensated for inconvenience caused.

Any right thinking person can see the lads point but he took the law into his own hands so to speak and that just won't do, I mean where that can lead to is scarey, can a police officer refuse to arrest someone of the same belief/faith, can a fire fighter refuse to put out a fire at someone's house who is from a different political party.......answer No they can't , the rest is rhetoric and mud slinging.

Yes He is a bit of a dick, but your previous mentioning of 'far to many immigrants in this country' has got nothing to do with this incident as the guy serving is obviously legit. The lad in my eyes is obviously offended by the presence of Robinson, but to prejudge his mate is a wrong call in my eyes. However it clearly states that this was not the case with Selfridgres mate,
They put out a statement that says that everyone is entitled to be served regardless of race colour or creed or personal beliefs which is why they gave TOM robbinson a luverly slap up meal "without prejudice of course"
Again if the roles here reversed there would have been an uproar.
