Hey; I'm brilliant at being modest. There's no one better than me at being modest.
I should have said you spelt f*cking brilliant incorrectly :)
Hey; I'm brilliant at being modest. There's no one better than me at being modest.
I think 2 things happened with our slump, the first as I've said on here was the injuries to Windass and Byers within 6 days of each other. Windass missed 9 games before returning with 2 games to go, & Byers hasn't played since 11th March missing 13 games including Friday and isn't expected back until pre-season.
Then you have to add into that Darren Moore tinkering, now losing 1-0 to FGR was the killer result, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. For that game he rested players and put in a couple of Fringe players we were playing Sat/Tues for a couple of weeks and it made sense, especially as a lot of the games we had on hand were away from home, the players he brought in didn't step up and it bit us on the arse. I back Moore with his decision the players should have grabbed the chance to get a place in the team which is then theirs to lose, 3 CM's failed to do this and all of them are younger players (we have the oldest average age in the division).
The next game at Cheltenham he then decided to swap the keepers, Dawson was given the numbner 1 slot in December after Stockdale was looking suspect especially to shots from outside the box, but the 3 games he played he continued with the same problem costing us goals, he then switched them back again. This for me is a clue we were panicing, we managed to pick up the results again but any points/games in hand advantage had gone and given Plymouth/Ipswich the upper hand, which they wouldn't give up.
When Moore came to the club we were told he likes to play 4-2-3-1 and at the beginning of last season we tried to do that, but I feel the lack of signing decent wingers made us change to either 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 which we have played 99% of games bar a couple going 4-2-2-2
The thing is if teams press us well (like Barnsley) and deny the wingbacks any space we struggle, we don't have a lot of pace in the team and can't play through teams.
I would have thought though that he would switch to a something like 4-2-3-1 if we are struggling against teams to try something different, especially as it#s his favoured formation but we don't.
Friday night we went 3-4-1-2 but with Patterson as the "1", he's the sort of player we miss when 's he's injured ut I couldn't tell you his position, he can play anywhere. Jack of all trades master of none if you will, this left us light in the middle of the park where I felt we were overun allowing them to get the 2 wingers on the ball a lot, as once they were through they could put balls out wide with us blowing out of our arse to get back.
Sily question but as you have touched on I presume like any fan a relegation especially the one to the third tier hurts more than say losing a final, league title?
When I meet fans of teams like Man Utd & Liverpool and it's a bad season they always come out with it's the worst ever, to which I say unless you have experienced a relegation you have no idea.
Thanks m8Thank you for that in depth and excellent summary of your season.
As for degrees of how much losing put or relegation hurts, we haven't lost out on a title in almost 44 years following City but losing the FA Cup Finsl in 81 hurt deeply but in a different way to getting relegated to the 3rd Tier. It's difficult to compare the two but going down to the 3rd also hurt deeply. If we lost the title in a tight race to the gruesome twosome it would also be very painful in a football context.
Going down to Division 2 in 82-83 was a shock to the system and cut deep as my first experienceof relegation. Tumbling from mid table security to that late Antic goal. All different and I can't hand in heart say going down to the 3rd was worse emotionally than the other 4 relegations or losing 2 Cup Finals even if of course it is the worst event in terms of status in the club’s history. I hated being in that league for so many reasons especially as it was such a fall from what the the club had been (not that anyone has a divine right to be in any league) and it plumbed new depths. Knowing the club had been run so badly was galling. Losing that 81 Cup Ginal especially when City should have won still resonates even if City won it 30 years later.
Thanks m8
I get that as losing to Arsenal in 93 FAC Replay still hurts, especially as it was a 120th minute winner. I console myself by saying we'd have lost on penalties anyway :)
I never rated Woods and preferred Pressman myself he was a lot slimmer in 93 too :)
It was £1m at the time which I think was a record for a UK keeper, Francis played with him at Rangers.A slimmer Kevin Pressman is hard to compute!
Agree about Woods who was a bit flaky on crosses and overated generally. Clearly his face fitted with the FA . Remember thinking why have Wednesday signed him. The money would have been better spent elsewhere.
Thanks m8Congratulations on the play off result @West Yorks Owl
I must admit that I had the radio on until 90 minutes at which point I went to bed as I had an early start this morning. Someone told me the result and I am gutted to have missed listening to it. That was a comeback that Real Madrid would have been proud of.
Hopefully the team has something left in the tank for Wembley.
