Have you got the intro to Thunderstruck nailed yet? It's a piece of piss....

Three chords and a wing and a prayer!

it was the last one I was given to learn before all hell broke loose and it’s been in storage unit for about a year :(

not given up hope yet

are you in the process of learning ?

My biggest breakthrough learning guitar was putting a drumbeat loop on and playing to that , it all sort of made more sense after that !!

I know loads of chords but I wouldn't know where to begin with the scales stuff it all seems so difficult
You can't just play anything can you ?

Just learn the blues scale and how to use it in a major and minor key and your good to go

are one to one lessons a good leg up?

i did 18 months learning maybe......7 years ago? I gave up, put it down, it just wasn't happening for me. But i'm keen to get back into it and thinking some proper tuition and the forced incentive of paid lessons might be a good way forward

I gave one on one lessons for 20 odd years, so I'd say definitely yes. It will give you discipline.

But get a tutor who is pliable, I always asked my students what they wanted to play and taught them accordingly.

thanks, from a beginners point of view, i am faced with those who are clearly capable students (cheapest end) all the way to full time session musicians etc (most expensive end), with the price varying accordingly. I know a lot of it is what you can afford, but is it worth diving in at the expensive end for a real beginner or just get a decent teacher who can get the basics across?

Completely agree with this. I initially played the piano and then moved on to guitar. My piano lessons were very classical training and going up the grades and I never really enjoyed it. Guitar, I had a few lessons with someone into the exact same music I wanted to play and was just fun, which always has to be the main thing if people really want to progress.

The one caveat is that when I did pick up the guitar, I found it a lot easier already having that base knowledge looking back now.

Pliable but with morals - I would always advocate testing the waters of requesting Eye of the Tiger or similar on your first lesson.

If the music teacher doesn't tell you to fuck off, they are not worth a wank.......... :-)

I have bought about 6 over the years - practice mull of kin tyre for a week, give up as my fingers are sore and have ended up being hit by it by a disgruntled ex wife with it at some point.

One day I will be able to play.
In fairness, Mull of Kintyre played repeatedly is enough to make anyone feel murderous!

I spent 10 years just learning chords and happily strumming to songs(still do) but I thought what the hell I will try a bit of blues stuff. Get a diagram of the 5 pentatonic blues shapes as reference( you won't need anymore than most of one and a little of 2 of the others to link up for more interesting stuff).

Go on Marc guitar and other sources(you tube) bang in blues riffs write them down and practice over slow blues backing tracks or just on your own.

The patterns become second nature. You will be amazed how good some things sound with even just a few notes.

The beauty is with scales the notes all sound good with one another. Tis like magic. I could make a blues song up in 2 minutes and I know fuck all about music theory.

We all await a sample of your output........... :-)
