I don't know how many times I've had this argument with people about why is X in the Premier League, when Y has great support. Simple, really. A club's league position is defined mainly by performances on the pitch (although Rangers and Leeds have had their wrists slapped for financial improprieties). It's up to each individual team to take care of business on the pitch. Having big support (though there always seems to be plenty of empty seats at Elland Road whenever they're on the box) does not earn you a place in the Premier League. Why should the players at, say, Hull be punished for the apathy of their fans? They earned their place in the PL due to their results last season; nothing more, nothing less. When Leeds manage to finish in the top 2, or win the playoff, then they'll be in the PL. It's not that difficult a concept to grasp.
My favourite chant to away supporters was to dirty Leeds' fans at Maine Road - probably their last season in the top flight - "Small Town in Bradford! You're just a Small Town in Bradford!"
