Leeds Utd v City - 1976/77 FA Cup

Loving all the stories on this thread. That's a cracking vid by the way PB. I was only 6 at the time so was way too young to be going to Leeds away and by the time I was attending City matches on a regular basis at the back end of the 80's things had calmed down a fair bit off the pitch and I'd missed the worst of the trouble that blighted much of the 70's and 80's.

Out of interest, when we played Leeds in the famous pitch invasion FA Cup tie the following season at Elland Road does anyone know roughly what numbers we took? I've read on here in the past that we perhaps had 15,000-16,000 in the ground but not sure whether that's a little on the high side as back then away clubs were entitled to 25% of the allocation for FA Cup ties which with ER's capacity would've equated to more like 12,000 or so. That said, on the YouTube vid of that game there were some very complimentary comments about our numbers from the Leeds fans and one actually went as far as saying it was the biggest away following he'd ever seen at Elland Road.

It was big,bad & boisterous...all of the faces & boxers were out that day.

Doesn't know the numbers but it was a big following like you said. We were in a fairly small group of Blues in what's now the John Charles Stand (I think) opposite the Lowfiekds where most away fans usually were. At the end of the game a Leeds fans said to my mum take the scarfs off the lads. (I was 7, our kid 9 and family friend about 10). He kindly explained that it was going to be very nasty outside.

Only ever seen the game footage of that one, could you post a link to the vid with the Leeds fans thoughts on our support?

Cheers

There was a home Match Programme, later in the season, when somebody complained in the Letters Page about the allocation for the Old Trafford Derby and the FA Cup Tie at Leeds.

A Club Official then quoted the official allocations, which I believe were 7500 and 12500. (not got the programme to hand)

That edit doesn't really show it but I remember it much the same way. He shifted to his right as it looked like the ball was going to the far post but it was headed back across goal and he had to stop and twist his body. Far better than Banks' save in 1970, where he was diving the right way to start with.

Match of the Day that evening compared the save with the Banks one. Along with the Montgomery saves, those are the best two I've ever seen.

Yep it takes 2 to tango.

Who remembers the guys who had a 10 minute punch up in their Kop before one of the cup ties then walked across the pitch end to end waving at the crowd (we were all along the side, behind the goals & had one third of the main stand seats) and taking the piss out of Leeds players. Did one of the give McQueen a slap ?

Spirit of MANCUNIA.

yes

Was the Newcastle game the 3 1 when it all kicked off? First police escort of my life at SJP, and we needed it!

Yes if my memory serves me right we were to the right of the goals in the open end and the police at first were allowing the geordies to give us a kicking. For some reason (probably panic) I headed to the centre spot and sat down where Mick Doyle politely told me to fcuk off. Anyway I was threw out but blagged my way back in again 5 minutes later.
Every time I went to St James Park in them days there was always some drama, not proud to confess but I woke up in a police cell at 10pm after the 4-3 title winning game in 1968 and was charged with drunk and disorderly. It wasn't the £3 fine that still annoys me it was the fact I didn't get to see all the game and the celebrations after.
