Leicester City (H) Post Match Thread

It’s not going to matter if we buy the next Nesta and Bareasi if they play inside the oppositions half and they’re not as fast as the winger or striker were fucked
All our studying, planing, Changing players, changing systems and all the other team has to do is tear it over the top and were a shambles
Pep actually decides how the other team will play for them

Imo, if we defended as Pep wants, then the first goal would not be scored, because Garcia would be right up there intercepting the ball, when the midfielder turned Fernandinho. That's where Vinny would have been & would have committed GBH if needed. He would get help from Walker & from Rodri 'sprinting' over.

But, if we take up that position, we are vulnerable to Vardy, etc, running behind & the defenders are scared of it & the whole team is scared of the defenders being scared of it.

So we end up with half the team in no mans land & some hoping to play offside to solve it.

The easy solution, is to pick defenders & mids who can actually do it.

well that went badly.

big concerns for me;

one: a team contained us easily, again, with a counter punch that clearly got into good positions immediately.
two: that team then abandoned that strategy and just played normally and battered us even more.
three: Mendy
four: utterly toothless attacking

They didn't contain us though. We scored 2 goals. That's enough.

We can't contain any team in the top half of the table, is the problem. They all scored two or more v City last season apart from Leicester.

I was about to mention this. Most games against a deep line we push walker and mendy very wide and very high up the pitch. Now sadly we are not talking about amazing attacking full backs, both walker and now Mendy don’t have an end product, so inevitably they lose the ball with an aimless cross or just turn and pass the ball back.

A consequence of this is naturally we are vulnerable to a counter account as our full backs are out of position and we also have 2 average paced cbs so a long punt up the pitch causes all sorts of issues.

When Liverpool -who have quality full backs attack then you can be sure that Henderson and another cm will be covering the space. They have more energy and pace so can stop counters.

Now this has been a big weakness of ours for a while now. So I’m not sure how the signing of a quality player in Dias who is not amazingly fast, who will still hold the high line would have made any difference at all to the goals conceded yesterday.

To me either we should have bought a rapid cb, then pushed Ake to lb and tell him to stay keep fernandinho at dm with the aim of staying deep and stopping counters.

Out wide I’m much rather have a sterling and Torres attacking the full backs, then we can push the attacking players around the box and at least have some semblance of shape.

Now we are all moaning about the areas lacking in the team but on paper we were much better than Leicester, so let’s not get carried away with this weakness as our flaws are known so we should have had some plan to rectify this.

I think we are going to look forward to the same sort of season as last year folks.

No pace in the team, a useless left-back and a slow CDM is gonna cost us.

Teams know how to play against us now, sit back, hit us on the break and get left with one on ones. It's criminal how one ball over bypasses our midfield.

It's criminal how we have not solved this issue, most blues can all agree what the problems are and the club are either oblivious on how we fix it or they don't see the same problem.

Both scary thoughts.

Spot on.

When was the last time one of our full backs got an assist? I can't even remember the last time Walker put a decent cross in.

If Dias is good, things will improve imo.

It's elementary shite defending which is ruining the whole confidence of the team. We are great until the first opposition breakaway, then the team starts to worry & the football standard starts to drop, the system starts to break down & then shambles.

A decent backline, will bring together the rest 'if' Dias is good.

Think we might see Ake a lot more at left back than we though, with Laporte partnered with Dias. Cancelo on the right, and you have a brand new back four to the one that started Centurions season.

Leicester were always going to sit back and use Vardy on the counter. Obvious tactics but we had no idea what to do against it.

I still don't understand why our defence doesn't drop a little bit deeper against pacey forwards to nullify the chance of them getting in behind. It would make Rodri's role easier also. Yes we probably wouldnt be able to press the Leciester defence in the way we did but we would of still created enough chances im sure to at least not lose the game.

I mentioned this earlier. It's the result of having inverted wingers that have to come inside. This means the only way we can get width is from the full backs. This leaves us short defensively when we lose the ball.

We were far more effective IMO when we had traditional wingers with Sterling on the right and Sane on the left. The full backs then pushed infield into a midfield position alongside the DM, meaning we had 3 deeper players plus the 2 CBs to break up counter attacks. Coupled with high intensity pressing up front, it meant we restricted break aways pretty effectively, certainly much more so than now.
