All the penalties were quite soft but they were all stupid ones to give away by the defenders. The 2 goals in open play were both great finishes.

I don't rate Garcia as a defender, he's OK on the ball but can't defend. We are thin on the ground for centre backs so Pep didn't have much choice but to play him. He's not good enough though IMO.

I'm not convinced by Mendy, we really need to sign a decent left back but seem to have missed the boat this window, unless there are plans afoot we don't know about.

Taking Fernadinho off was a strange sub. Not sure what Pep was thinking.

Not sure what's going on with Pep at the moment but he is looking to me like he doesn't really want to be here anymore. Things might change if we bring in some more players but so far this transfer window hasn't been the best.
 
We needed this. It should be a massive wake up call. Lack of pace at the centre of defence continues to be our achilles heel. It’s only made worse by insufficient pace and energy at the CDM position and a brainless left-back.

Dias won’t solve anything. A pair of Laporte and Dias is more worrisome than the centre-back pairing we played today. Player recruitment, particularly when it comes to defensive areas, has been abysmal. That won’t change until the people making those decisions changes.

Perhaps this will be a reality check for a lot of people. We’ll be scraping for top-four this season, not challenging for the title let alone the Champions League. The weaknesses that were glaringly obvious last season remain. Not even Messi can paper over these issues.
