As difficult as it must be for us to admit, Kompany is no longer the reliable leader he once was. Even if he does stay fit this season, the injuries he's had will eventually take their toll on his overall condition. In addition to that, Otamendi and Mangala have both looked inconsistent since they arrived, while Denayer and (potentially) Stones are still very young and therefore unable to lead a back four every week.

Bonucci makes sense. He's won six Italian titles in his career, has managed 101 appearances over the last two seasons (Kompany has managed just 55) and has recently hit his peak. We have to rebuild this side somehow, Bonucci is a good first step.

Simple fact is he's much better than any CB we have (except a fit Kompany which is sporadic at best)..... so we'd still have a walking disaster next to him 75% of the time .....playing 3 at the back without buying 2 is scary!
At least we're trying to upgrade on what we have rather than bulking a squad with more of the same.

I think it's clear that Pep will not accept relying on Kompany. He already went through a shitshow at Barcelona when he was let down by Puyols fitness.

I'd say Kompany pre-Pellegrini was better than Bonucci, but Bonucci is definitely the better of the 2 now, and also has the passing.

I'd hope that Kompany would regain that 2012 form under Pep, and the two of them toghther would be immense.

However, I'm not sure how we can fit into the squad restrictions, let alone balance Bonucci, Stones, Otamendi and Kompany, even if VK is injured more often than usual, let alone Denayer.
