Lescott Transfer Saga: Moyes Vs Hughes
Manchester City have learnt from their mistakes in January, with fond memories of Kaka, and have conducted their summer transfer dealings in a very professional and business-like manner. Not once have they made it clear to the media about their offers and just kept their enquiries silent. Gareth Barry, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Carlos Tevez to name a few transfers this summer that have been completed in such a manner. The only way the media knew was through the other respective party, but then everything had been agreed already, before the fans could intervene (A la Kaka).
All's good, right? Wrong. Moyes feel the need to publicly televise City's bids for Lescott to show that he supposedly has the courage to reject a big-money bid for Lescott.
Stretching back to the 8th of June, the long, drawn-out saga of Lescott's future has dominated the media, with City bidding no less than twice for the England defender. Hughes wanted the transfer to be concocted behind closed doors just like the previous transfers. However, Moyes stupidly let it out in the public, doing no favours to Lescott or City. This caused problems with Lescott's supposed imminent transfer and this was entirely down to Everton FC and David Moyes. Man City simply wanted to tempt Joleon Lescott to City, offering him greater ambition, money and a platform to fulfil his undoubted potential. However, Moyes blocked City's initial offer of £16m by announcing it to the media and making it clear he wasn't for sale, while at the same time, blasting the City manager. This was followed by a further £18m offer and more criticism from Moyes.
From a non-Evertonian perspective, Mark Hughes has done nothing wrong. Moyes is simply rattled that City may rip the glue from his tattered team. But is it really fair to stop a player from leaving against their will? It will only cause Everton to have an unsettled player and £18m short in the bank. Their financial issue is hardly a well-kept secret.
Everton have been plagued with injuries this season, and with their already thin squad, the pressure is getting to him. This was shown as Arsenal ripped Everton's defence to pieces with their scintillating display that allowed them to bag 6 'goal-of-the-month' worthy goals. Although Lescott wasn't particularly at fault, his lapse in concentration and laziness cost Everton. His mind is clearly elsewhere and this is down to Moyes' selfish and hard-headed stance.
However, his arrogant ways will only cost him. Hughes is in the driving seat in this saga as Lescott made it apparent he wanted to join the Revolution with his clearly written transfer request as the fans cheers during the friendly fell on deaf ears.
It's a case of who will back down. Hughes definitely won't as he has Moyes exactly where he wants him. An unhappy player and lacking financial funds. It's only a matter of time before a third and final bid will be done and Moyes will have no option to accept, even if he doesn’t want to, the big man upstairs will force the transfer. Thus proving Moyes has limited control over his transfers and making the Everton manager lose that all-important pride. The one thing he tried to prove by making the initial interest/bid public.
Time's up Moyes...
