When footballers start pushing for paycuts whenever the form and value drops I'll concede that they have every right to be expecting payrises when their form and value increases.

What happened to the days when a contract meant something?

Bah. If another employer comes to you and offers you twice the wage for the same job you just have to hand in your notice and there's nothing your current employer can do. Football clubs have enough in their favour being able to tell players they're not allowed to work for other companies, and demanding fees of millions of pounds in compensation. Why should a footballer be treated differently to an IT consultant, teacher, electrician etc.?

My current employer hasn't risked millions of pounds to "purchase" my services, or invested hundreds of thousands developing my talents to the level where I'm earning £40k a week.

Football clubs have enough in their favour being able to tell players they're not allowed to work for other companies, and demanding fees of millions of pounds in compensation. Why should a footballer be treated differently to an IT consultant, teacher, electrician etc.?

If players want freedom of movement all they have to do is sign rolling six month contracts. But they want the security of a long term, they should realise that comes with sacrifices and responsibilities.

I wonder how much opinions on this have changed since we're the ones chasing players. When SWP got a move to Chelsea, and a payrise equivalent of his £21m value I can't remember too many people showing similar sympathy.
