When he starts in the more advanced role he rarely does much in the first half, his attacking threat is generally in the second half. Most of his goals are in the 2nd half, irrespective of whether he starts forward or deep.
His passing game is much better than he's given credit for. When he does start deep he's always been given license to push forward when the game demands it.
There maybe a case for changing his role if we move away from the 2 holding midfielders set up. If we don't then he should be one of the 2. Otherwise we end up too defensive. We end up with Yaya playing at the expense of Tevez or Nasri and two ultra defensive midfielders such as Garcia & Barry. That's not an attacking option.

Not entirely sure where this myth has come from that he was suddenly asked to play a more defensive role this season than last. 95% of the time he's played in exactly the same position as last year, just nowhere near as well (like the rest of the team)
