Leyton Orient (A) | FA Cup | Post Match Thread

It was absolutely pissing down on a shit pitch while we had a mish mash team out of youth players and new signings inc debuts. We were also only behind due to a freak goal which goes in 1/100.

Cup runs are full of such results and performances. In 2011 we almost went out to Notts County and barely had a shot on goal until Dzeko equalised late on.
Very good point . Micah Richards run and cross from the right by line and Dzekos brilliant finish ,earning us a replay we didn't really deserve ?

And then we absolutely smashed them at the Etihad..I travelled up on the Notts county supporters club coach that day ...everyone one of those County fans were absolutely buzzing to be off to City in a cup tie .

Talking to some of the older loyal fans, some of them were at Maine rd in 1980 in the league cup tie City won 5-1 when Dennis Tueart scored 4
I've still got the local paper news cutting ..in bold letters the headline screamed " Dennis The Menace!!!!"

some of the lads on that coach I've known for over 4 decades ,one of them ,shall we say ,erm ran into Tony Coton, in a pitch invasion after our 'FA cup defeat at meadow lane in the snow ...Coton smacked him and offered him out .I worked with the lad involved ,who funnily enough was the keeper for our office football team ..and a handy lad in his own right. .

Blimey, I seem to be able to get you to write an essay every time I mention a random game.

I look forward to your critique of City 0-0 Sheffield United in 1998 and how that compares to the Burnley friendly.
Surprised you even read my posts ,or do u just skim through them ; )
No memory of thst game would have been there ,but heavy drinking days I'm afraid Alan.

There was nothing to remember really. They had a 45 year old Ian Rush up front and I think it was Jamie Pollock’s debut for us. Seem to remember him punching one of their players 10 mins in, but it wasn’t seen.

Apart from that, it was dire.

It was a fantastic effort.. nobody can deny that ..but at the end of the day it's still an own goal..shame it didn't go in from the shot as it was genuinely deserving of a goal for the lad.
Exactly.. it was the audacious effort that deserved the applause didn't it? High pressure and took some balls..div 1 player taking that on v champions. He had a split second to think then execute. OG of not thsts some skill

It was a brilliant peice of skill.

Hate to tell but I have kicked a ball at a decent level. Yes he struck the ball well but that’s it. Without it hitting Ortega it wouldn’t have been a goal. Doesn’t matter whether he was 0.1, 0.5 or an inch away from perfection. My point about Ortega just watching it was to show it wouldn’t have been a goal and then everyone would have said how unlucky Orient were.
Yes but it wasn"t just the great connection it was the speed of thought. If Ortega knew it was going to clip the underside of the bar he'd have some matrix skills..sadly he hasn't..great strike from the lad

It’s one of the smallest revenue streams out of all of them.

Clubs barely sell many replica shirts, even the biggest clubs don’t even top 2 million.

This is from 2022-23:

Most shirts sold worldwide are in the fakes market from which clubs get £0.
Have the GMP clamped down on the snidey football gear around the Strangeways markets area yet ?
Cannot believe that Real Madrid are not the biggest sellers of shirts, worldwide ?

Really.
That's take a look
City a team of lads that haven't played much with a few new lads from the transfer window.
A team lacking confidence against a team playing their biggest game of their career.
That team than scores a screamer, the pressure is now on.
Tackles being allowed that wouldnt be in the pl. The studs down the back of the calf a clear red card.
Awful ref
The pitch was dogshit even for that level of football.
This is what makes the fa Cup so good the big teams are taken out of their comfort zone.
Heard it all before. Sorry. We were lucky to win that. Wasn't expecting a slaughter but thought at least a couple of goals in it.

Nope.
More... City's win at Newport in the fa cup a few years back .
A nothing game to a lot of City fans ( like yourself ?) as we were expected to win easily.....

Here once again I can draw parallels with Orient away on the Sat.

This was of course the mighty Manchester City drawn away against little Newport , on a dreadful pitch,on a ground practically no Blue had ever visited before ,with I'd guess not a single one of our players having the pleasure either . You see Alan, different matches mean different things to different City fans.... each to their own pal. Nostalgia still exists in football for those who are not dismissive of the smaller clubs and where City have come from ...

Watching City at Newport was brilliant another match I'll never forget.
A quagmire of a pitch, really dreadful, possibly watered even further by the home side ...to bring us down to their level.

David Silva was absolutely brilliant that day , controlling the tempo and pace of the game ,whilst Newport went at us like attack dogs from the off,Silva kept his head ,directing operations until ,gradually Foden, who'd intially ...got caught up in the 100mph stuff in the 1st half,.. picked up the mantra from the more experienced Silva and began looking to retain posession and tire the opposition out.....

sure enough as the game progressed ,Newport faded ( A New- port Fades) - joy division, get it Alan?).... and Foden strode forward from deep central midfield ,striding past the now tierd Newport challenges in the 2nd half to score two brilliant goals .

Foden was subbed after his 2nd goal,a real pep trait over the years .....he avoids individual accolades.....and left the pitch with a passing accuracy of 91% ,to a standing ovation from both away and a few home supporters . ( God knows what David Silva s stats were that day ,for they eclipsed Fodens I imagine .

The main thing that stands out from the match tho mr Harper, is the memories of any young ,home ,Footbal fan who was lucky enough to get a ticket that day ...they will always remember the effortless ball control of David Silva and two quite brilliant goals from Foden.

Anymore, apparently meaningless matches youd care to pluck from City's past ; ) friendlies don't count ..

Talking of memories,if your not fast asleep by now mate... it's getting very close to the 45th anniversary of my 1st ever live City match ,ask me nicely and I'll talk you through that match too.............
I can still see. Foden gliding across that terrible pitch like he was not even touching the ground . Unplayable that day and a brilliant away day.

Because it would not have gone in if it did not bounce back and hit Ortega.

Fantastic strike that it was.

Some people......
Of course it was an O.G but i remember us praising McNab's passing and vision ..D Silva's little slide balls ..not everything that's good in football = a goal. This non goal was, as a football fan, very good to watch even though it was against my team!

That game left me nostalgic

I cheered when they scored. They had been brave in moments before, braver than most PL teams over the 6/7yrs and i can appreciate and respect that

Even with the mishmash of players and that godawful pitch, I knew we’d come through. This isnt patronising in the slightest, our poor 1st half gave them hope and a moment their fans will never ever forget.

That’s what football is all about, moments of immeasurable joy mixed in with slightly longer periods of hope. If a team is lucky, as we have been, they become a regular occurrence. But also as weve seen this season and them in red have experienced for nearly a decade now, it doesn’t last forever

For those humble enough, barring the obvious injury, everyone won on Saturday

It’s a good reminder for us

In cup games a one goal win means you progress to the next round..that's ultimately the goal..we won ..we progressed..same as we did beating Salford 8-0..
It's not how many you win by in cup games it's winning the game that counts.
I'm pretty sure Dipper fans would have loved a 2-1 win yesterday..but they didn't and they are out..if we win the cup who's really going to remember how scrappy a game it was..
Enjoy the fact that We Won

I didn't fucking cheer, although I cheered when KDB scored.
