Liam Delap - Ipswich player 2024-25

If we do end up buying Kane, then Delap is a perfect understudy to him.

Going on loan is great in theory, but I'm always of the mind that you do that with your "lesser" talented players, any player who thr club truly wants to integrate, it's better off bringing them in for a year and see how it goes.

He's young enough that it's worth it for both him and City to see how he carries on, if he's not ready, it's not a waste of a year, he would have still gotten alot out of it, and you can then loan him out.
Didn't do Kane himself any harm going out on loan.

If Kane does come I'd keep him here and in (without sounding raggy) the games we've won by HT I'd pull Harry and give him a regular 30 mins.

If we get someone else I'd do the loan option as our play wouldn't necessarily suit him at the moment.

Does anyone know if the PL is sticking with the 9 subs next season? Or are they reverting back to 7. If it’s back to 7 then I reckon a loan would be best as he’ll be struggling to make the bench unless we have a massive injury crisis.

Chelsea prove the loan system is a brilliant tool.

Or do you disagree?
I said they haven't had anyone as talented as Foden to bring through, so the "less talented" players benefitted from the loan system. Which is what he said.
The closest they have is Hudson-Odoi, who has not gone out on loan.
Mount, Tomori, Abraham, James and Christensen all went out on loan, none as talented as Foden, and half will be gone in a year.

This also ignores the hundreds of failed Chelsea loanees (Baker, Loftus-Cheek, Miazga, Piazon, Sinclair, Kakuta, Dasilva, Kenedy, Chalobah, Grant, Nathan, Nartey, Maddox, Brown, Cork, Solanke, Colkett, McEachran, Scott, Kalas, Aina, Boga, Mellis, Musonda) and the fact Chelsea would never have given some of their young players any chances if it wasn't for their transfer ban.

If Chelsea had someone as good as Foden then they would be able to bring them through without any loans.
They tried with Hudson-Odoi but he's not as good as Foden.

This is the Delap thread though, and James and Mount were/are of an equal standard,if not better. The loan system improved them immeasurably, and now sees them in the first team in a CL winning side. That probably would not have happened otherwise, and it will be the same with our kids if they stay at City with no meaningful playing time.

Well I guess that is the debate.

I’m not saying Delap should or shouldn’t go out on loan. I’m not convinced he’s Foden’s level but if he could get 1000 minutes at City that would be better than 2000 in the Championship.

I would love him to stay around the first team but I’m not sure he’s good enough yet to demand the minutes he needs at City.

Yeah you got the idea.

Chelsea loan out loads of players all the time, one or two becoming quality enough for the first team is bound to happen due to sheer volume.

I'm not saying City shouldn't loan players, we still do that, and maybe like Chelsea, in the future one or two make it, but so far none have and the ODDS as Chelsea have proven are so incredibly low.

Then there's the whole debate about well they did well on loan, but that was a lesser league and doesn't play our style etc that you see happen about successful loan spells.

Also, what if we loaned Foden and they didn't treat him right? Gave him no minutes, didn't fit well with the team etc. It's possible Chelsea had amazing talents that they loaned out and ruined their potential, it's possible.

It's far more logical to just give the top talent a year around the first team squad and see how they play about, even if it's less minutes, because they could show something really special that they'd have to at this age to have a chance at City.

Foden showed it at 16 years of age with his first team showing, everyone could see what a talent we have to nurture. Delap, and Palmer in this case are older, they need to impress if they stay with us for a year. I bet even Mount and James if given first team chances first would have shown some quality as well. Even if the standard wasn't there, just loan after, win-win situation.

It is very difficult to judge what is best for an academy player or if they are going to mature into a future first team player.

Heard today that Preston are trying to get Delap and Cole Palmer on loan for next season. From a very reliable source who just said Preston are hoping to get it finalized this week. Not sure if it’s really the loan I’d hope for as Preston are a pretty poor side and now have a manager no one really knows anything about.

If true,its a great move.

Playing regularly (hopefully) for a championship club at their stage will develop them enormously - much more than rotting in our squad.

Happy they are going out on loan, just think they will be in a very poor struggling Preston side. Will be a good learning curve for them.

Not sure any if any of the teams are that great but Preston will play both and if one team get both Delap and Palmer, then they've potentially got a great creator and a great scorer for championship level... Even with 7-8 hard working players that can pay off for promotion places, I'm sure they have quick wingers or at least had one when I saw them last year too so could be quite good for them and us.

That's if we're definitely gonna loan both out though.

If we dont buy anyone these 2 are going nowhere.
