Another thing: Had it not been for Iraq, tonight we might all have been fearing nuclear annihilation.

We've been facing that since 1945.Nothing new there.
I'm guessing by that you mean Saddam's non-existant nuclear capability?

Ask the rest of the world who has the biggest number of long range nuclear missiles, artilery shells, free fall bombs and the means to deliver them.

I'll give you a clue-they aren't based in the Middle East...
.

America/Russia... anyone who doesn't know that is an idiot. People aren't claiming that the Middle East has more nukes than America, that's ludicrous but 1 nuke is enough for a rogue state to bring the world into turmoil. That's the worry.

Irony

United States: We can't let [insert country] get a nuclear weapon, they might use it.

Nothing at all ironic about it. They know what it means to do it and so are speaking from experience.

And I think you might find that the nuclear non-proliferation treaty is a UN mandate not US.

The Mirage F1's first flight was in 1966, not what I'd call a "Modern Fighter Jet"

The Tornado first flew in 1975.

The Phantom first flew in 1960.

Both still being used. It's just a matter of upgrading the avionics.

It would be a huge amount of money involved to upgrade those old fighters to have the technology of the modern ones, even if it was possible. It is not as simple as replacing a part a computer or other software/hardware. Sure they might upgrade them to carry more modern missiles but i doubt much is needed.

It makes absolutely no sense to attack group troopers or civilians with a jet fighter without any bombs/ missiles. The whole story makes no sense. It would cost a lot of money to use those airplanes only to attack the protesters. For every hour of flight there is usually an hour or more ( a lot more) of repair needed for the next flight.
