Libya (Merged)

Re: Looks like as from 10pm we are at war

Another thing: Had it not been for Iraq, tonight we might all have been fearing nuclear annihilation.

Good.

I think the position of your modern day stereotypical far left-winger is pretty abhorrent most of the time when it comes to foreign policy. The 'we have no business there' sort of thing. The same thing which would have lead to the entire extermination of European Jews and other minorities.

I've always been a fan of interventionism. It should be an embarrassment to us all that the horrors of Darfur and Rwanda have happened without genuine intervention.

Obviously, there needs to be some serious scrutiny on any foreign intervention to see whether it really is necessary. In Libya, I believe that is the case. Nobody should have the power to take another's life in the 21st Century, especially not to the level that Gaddafi might.

We have learnt something from the middle east uprising. We now know that it is unacceptable to intervene, until the people are brave enough to challenge their own dictator. This should have been applied to Iraq - which was a military disaster.

This is a fantastic post Nashark, but you do have some inconsistent views when it comes to warfare.

Not exactly war, it's a no fly zone which is fully justified

Libya is a complex problem for Europe yes they have plenty of oil, which like it or not we need, but it has been one of the main conduits for illegal immigration from sub Saharan Africa, which has caused great problems in Spain and Italy.

Diplomacy can be a dirty buisiness and sometimes it is best to look the other way, like I said the west needs oil to function, it's your standard of living we are talking about here, and our economic future.

I also do not see a problem with having a democratic government in Libya, one where the oil revenues are spread around the populous, for the amount of oil that is in Libya the population should have the same living standards as the main Gulf countries

wouldn't be to sure on that mate....the rules of engagement change once no-fly zones are initialised

i can almost garauntee that we have been waging a secret war and supporting the uprising on the quiet...those SAS troppers that were caught a couple of weeks ago were on their way to meet rebel leaders

So does China yet you never see them getting involved in these wars do you?

(playing devils advocate, I think we should stop the bombing of their own people)

The Rwanda/Darfur episode is a disgrace to the UN, a stain on them, why nothing was done sooner is a travesty. No oil?

To have a no fly zone you have to Bomb the Air Defences & shoot down Libya"s planes that is War .it has Fu*k all to do with us & as we have all but disbanded the airforce it is going to be impossible for us to do without the Americans .God Help us .we had a no fly zone in the Balkans but still it did not stop thousands from dying .if it was not for the OIL Britain would not give a Fu*k what happens to the people of Libya .

Hmmm So are you saying that China are not involved in world geo politics? They have been buying up large chunks of countries that contain oil, and propping up some rather odious dictators (just like we do) the simple fact is that China despite all the bluster is not yet capable of getting involved in a far off war, but they do get involved in wars nearer their own back yard.

As for the Balkans, I can't remember if there was a no fly zone or not, but I do remember the one over Iraq imposed a little late but saved 1000's of lives
