If all it would take is to trigger his release clause, and we are prepared to do it … why haven't we?
We can't afford him. We're already going to fail the first monitoring period for FFP and ask UEFA for dispensation because we're moving towards profitability. Even if Barry goes, Lescott goes, and Dzeko goes we still can't afford him.
Let's say each of them are on an average of £7m a year. We save £21m on wages.
In amortisation costs we'll save £2.2m on Barry, £4.4m on Lescott and £5.5m on Dzeko adding up to a saving of £12m a year.
So just by moving these on we'll move towards profitability another £32m.
If we then sign Messi and he costs the reputed £200m/£300k on even a 6 year deal would mean that he completely wipes out that £32m saving in amortisation alone, it being £33m a year, and his wage on top would be another £15m.
I've done that horrible thing where I've tried to prove my case and actually convinced myself of the opposite. Presuming revenue growth continues and we don't have to slash the wage budget to make savings, and presuming Messi would bring in over £15m of revenue a year, this could make sense financially. That's a lot of presumptions but the deal could be done, potentially
