Just a thought, but would El Presidente come out of it well, if he agrees a settlement with Messi & they part with smiles & handshakes, while Messi says polite goodbyes & emotional thankyous & doesn't slaughter the board in public ?

No, and that's the problem. They'll put up a fight to placate their fans. They'll let Messi do all the dirty work to show the fans that Barca should let him go.

IDK man I can't see barca or Messi wanting to go to Court for this.
I reckon a fee of £85mil + a player and it'll be set. Hopefully Garcia

I agree, I think unfortunately there is going to be a lot more public game playing from the Barca and Messi camps before we get there. Barca don't want to be seen to let him walk out and Messi doesn't want to burn his bridges (although he's already done the hard bit there).

I think you're right in terms of the deal but if we sign him I expect it to be for €100 million so Barca can save face. Eric Garcia transfer will probably then go through for €30 million separately.

So it'll be the same difference but they can push the narrative that they got €100 mill for a 33 year old, they didn't want him to leave but they got the best deal in the circumstances.

My main concern is Messi having a change of heart. If he's as committed to this as he seems I think we will get him. Unfortunately it probably won't be for a little while yet.

Is it right Messi can buy his way out of Barca by paying off his remaining contract?

We are doing the right thing here by waiting as relationships crumble. Each statement accredited to Barca just adds fuel to Messi's decision to leave. Look at the way we treated Komps and Silva - dignity and a big thank you for all they had done for the club & the community. Leaving in a good way always pays (unless you have an ego as big as Yaya's) - By contrast, Barca's stance threatens to taint Messi's love of Barca and will only confirm to him that it's time to leave. He's been there for 20 years and now they wish to hold him to ransom! They really are in a mess, whereas we look after our players and treat them as people rather than purely assets. Enjoy the ride, this could get interesting.

Khaldoon on Aguero leaving -

We will work it out together and it will be very natural, wherever that is, this year or the year after. It will play out in a comfortable way whatever Sergio decides. We have been very lucky, and it’s a testament to the type of players we have had over the years, to have players like David Silva, Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta, like Sergio Agüero, that have stuck with the team many years.
“They are part of the DNA of the club now and the decision of them to continue or stop, it’s the comfort zone that they have to decide. It was the same way with Vincent. He left when he felt it was right for him to leave and the same thing with David. Sergio is going to be the same.”
That was published 1 day before the Messi transfer request. 1 day! Might as well have said "We treat our legends the way they deserve unlike some people..."

This is just a battle between Messi and Barca that has to play out now. Frustrating but City can do nothing other than wait and hope the Messi camp get Barca to agree to come to the table on a sale. Barca obviously starting from “it must be the release clause”. Messi starting from “it must be a free transfer”. So in time, hopefully they come together in the middle, then once City know the fee, they scramble to make it work with FFP. It will drag on and on. But hey, they’re only 700m Euros apart :)

I can’t see City being happy with paying a big fee. I don’t see Barca letting him go for anything less than £100m, and that to me is a fuck load of money for a 33 year old. If he’s got a clause in his contract that allows him to move on for free, the fuckers should let their best ever player leave without any fuss. Can see this going on all next week and eventually settling in court.

@Prestwich_Blue has stated how City could afford Messi with increased sponsorship and maybe a couple of player sales. The increase in sponsorship is exactly the reason Barca can not let / (do no want) Messi to leave as they are already feeling the pinch in terms of ageing squad and needing to refresh. Couple this with your cash cow wanting to leave and Barca could be screwed for years to come (thanks in no small part to UEFA and FFP!) Hence the need to try to get a fee for Messi and as big a fee as possible to boot.
I would love to know what he does bring in to Barca, if he's on 500k week plus the same in bonuses, Image rights etc, the amount must be scary, or is one reason they (President) would be happy for him to leave is the numbers no longer add up?
