I think it was because of bartomeu's huge ego. Nothing else makes sense. And Maybe club could have lost quite a bit of sponsors without messi too.

If he didn't take barcelona to court he won't leave barcelona in middle of the season for money/pay cut. He is probably going to take it.
A lot will be predicated on the results of the upcoming vote & possible early elections

Anything’s possible but Barca need some major cost cutting - they are 1.5 billion in debt - so they’ll have to balance the value of Messi within their income with the huge cost of retaining him.

Just a feeling, he didn't want them to take to court. Who knows he may agree for a pay cut given that Barça are screwed financially
Obviously I hope I am wrong and he signs on 1st Jan with us!
