Still, it isn't an impossiblity. Highly doubtful, but it would be completely different to going to court against Barcelona. He would be using a legal method to terminate his contract, like he thought he could do over the summer, with January not that far away.

It seems perception matter so much to him, but is signing a pre-contract in January really any different to terminating your contract a month or two before january?

Again, most likely outcome i see, him signing a contract extension by january with a new board in place.

They've already shown they don't give a fuck about carrying or increasing debt.

The reason they haven't signed the players they wanted isn't their reluctance to increase their debt, it is simply the Spanish legislation that currently prohibits losses without some balance nationwide, it isn't because they can't afford them. Eventhough they trylu can't.

The Barcelona vice president has claimed that the upcoming wage cuts will not apply to players, just to other club staff.

So guess any talk of messi refusing a pay cut and using that ad a mechanism to terminate his contract (which was unlikely regardless) can be put to bed for now.

Barca like most clubs had a very relaxed attitude to debt - they had huge income and a regional government that would help out when required. Barca’s present rate of debt - a little over 1.5 billion is looking a lot less sustainable with income falling and the regional government effectively suspended. Barca need to make interest payments in the region of 75m per year - so whether they like it or not they will seriously have to pull their belts in and reduce their cost base. The 1.5 bn figure I’ve quoted doesn’t cover other liabilities - like wages and other operational payments - if you include those it’s probably nearer 2bn. I’m hoping the rags are in a similar predicament!
