I've been wrong before and this certainly won't be the last time, but on paper, it's a fuck-ton of money for a declining player, albeit the best player in the world. Will it raise our profile, sponsorships etc? Definitely. Do I think we'll suddenly get millions of new fans because he's played 1.5 years in the twilight of his career at City? No.I think when city look at this deal they don’t see it as a City signing it’s a CFG signing.
They are playing 50 mill for a player that will be in the group for 5 years.
It’s impossible to say the impact be will have on the team, you Personally don’t think he will make us champions league favourites (Infact we have been favourites for the last 3 years) but pep might see a way of playing that will take us to another level with Messi in the side. Maybe he will just give the lads a boost and give us a feel good factor that means we put a run together. It’s easy to say he’s not the Messi of 5 years ago but He’s still Messi and he still can win you a game in a second.
We saw the coverage and media influence he would bring in The summer when every tweet about him leaving Barca was breaking records for most retweeted. He’s huge and would take us to another level, you’d see City/Messi merchandise in every shop you went in no matter where in the world you was.
He will improve the city team for two years then make New York the biggest club in America. A market that is still expanding.
The owners see value in the deal, they want it to happen and judging on how they have done so far in moving us forward over the past decade I’d trust them to be right.
They owe money to everyone. Construction company, other clubs for transfer fees then wages on top of that etc. They have offloaded quite a few players recently. Is their wage bill still such an issue?
City being the team he decided to leave his beloved club for would be a big statement and would help attract people to the club. To be honest I see no point getting too bogged down in the nitty gritty and all the financial details because I’m sure our higher ups have it all worked outI've been wrong before and this certainly won't be the last time, but on paper, it's a fuck-ton of money for a declining player, albeit the best player in the world. The point you raised about NYCFC is interesting. Seems we're going all in on the American market. Hopefully we can start to get the next Gio Reyna or Pulisic out of it. I'm guessing the plan is to pay for the new stadium, get a solid fanbase in the US & open us up to more investment. Financially, it's got to increase the value of CFG.
In that instance, it would indeed pay for itself. I guess you're right on that one.
