It would make so much sense to get a deal done in January before their election when none of these candidates would get credited with letting him leave

The presidential candidates are all now joining in the messi pissing context.

some will convince him to stay with a new sporting project, others will offer him a job for life, now pne wants to rename the stadium after him..

"Regardless of the fact that [Messi's] contract expires at the end of this season, because he is the present and at the same time living history of world football and of Barca, I intend to propose to our members via a referendum for the stadium to be renamed the 'Camp Nou Leo Messi."

Camp Messi

I was laughing about that today! All the candidates are living in a dream world.

Fonts still claiming he’s bringing pep back, one blokes buying neymar, another has mentioned Haaland.

They are all completely ignoring the fact they have no money and an ageing side.
It's politics, when has any politician told the truth?

Exactly. They can all promise stuff but they are hoping it gets taken off their plate before the elections. That may even be a reason why they called the elections for the very end of january. And to leave as little of the window left so that it buys them time for the next one with any signings.

This would be the perfect storm for most of the candidates.
In these 'Covid' times the last thing a new president probably really wants is a 50-60m bill for one 'ageing' player.
Most would be, privately, happy if he went I would imagine, instantly saving them a fortune and allowing the club to rebuild.
They'd rightly blame Bartomeu and say Messi's mind was already made up to leave.
However if he stays, it'll be on new reduced terms. They wave and tell the public they kept him and Messi has took a huge paycut.
WIN WIN

So it begins the ‘we tried but couldn’t keep him’ stance. A nice change of pace...

Rosaud is a non-factor in the upcoming election, a Bartomeu/Rosell stooge - a continuity candidate, like Freixa

Laporta announces his platform on Monday, the new board will either be led by him or Font IMHO
