Which he helped to create. They won big trophies and had to reward the success, his high salary dragged the ceiling higher for all of his team mates.
Perhaps the people running the club could have been like "he's fucking Messi, we are paying him more" rather than being like "Coutinho, have you fancied earning alnearly as much as Messi if you hand on heart promise to be as good as him at some point".

Strawman. "Rewarding success",as in his teammates who won trophies with him not new signings. Messi's salary in 19/20 was more than the next two highest earners combined, the idea it wasn't the reason they built up huge debts is just delusional.

Coutinho's salary was always going to be high when they paid so much money to sign him. You don't sign a player for over 100 million and then pay them 5 million per annum.

Nah.... they fucked themselves with the Neymar money. President thingybob was a twat. He kept everyone happy by throwing about as much money as possible. That was his entire 'qualification' for being president. He signed massive, massive checks. Peter Swales used to do a similair thing. Spend the clubs money on overpriced signings for the positive press. And it buys you people who are loyal.

$25+ mill a year to Coutinho and the likes was insanity. 30m for Greizman. Very nearly twice what Haaland or KDB earn today. And Haaland's contract will still be going, a decade after Coutinho signed his. Think about that.

Here's a good one. When they signed Umtiti. Remember him. They gave him a 2000% pay increase. £30k p/w, to £600k p/w.

Another from the 17/18 season. Pique, already earning about what the likes of Lewandoski did, got a double your money increase. £30m a year. Alba, same thing, more than doubled his money. Because politics, and PR. They were the Barca boys. The president bought their loyalty, and he secured his reign.

Although I will say there is no way Messi did not get his beak wet during those years.
