This summer is probably the last chance to get him while he still has some great years ahead of him. After that I wouldn't bother. But people who talk about shirt sales really don't understand the commercial power of Messi. Fortunately, our owner does and has made sure that the commercial deals will pretty well pay for his fee and wages. That means it's also not a case of "We could spend that money on four other players."

Can you imagine how much the club suits would try to exploit that draw though in respect of ticket prices? Doesn't bear thinking about.

Dread to think what season ticket renewals would rise by, and we've had enough as it is.

I know it's not my money and I appreciate that money isn't really an issue as far we're concerned. My main gripe is that i don't think he's guaranteed to lift us to the next level on the pitch in the way others do. He's been at Barca since he was 13 years old, it would be a big change. Whilst i think people over exaggerate his failures to replicate his club form for Argentina, it's definitely worth bearing in mind that he hasn't been able to exert quite the same influence whilst playing for the national side. People seem to think getting Messi will guarantee Champions league success or something. I personally think we stand a better chance of winning the champions league if we address our other problems. That's not to say i don't think it'd be exciting if he came, i just think there's a possibility his next move could end up being a little underwhelming. I don't think there's a whole lot wrong with what i'm saying there and i remain open minded to the idea (of course i do, it's Messi!)

I understand your pov but i think your worry would be unfounded. He would invigorate every other player in the squad and they would break their spine to show they can meet his standards on field.
I think the national side thing is rubbish also, he has done well but national teams need luck to. They will never be as well drilled as a club side and with his passing and general speed around the pitch his national team mates are always going to be playing catch up.
If there is a single player who can enthuse the whole club and give us real belief we can smash Europe he is that man.

I don't like tying in footy with off field stuff aka money but he would also help the wallet situation also i think. There are many non footy fans out their but Messi fans and a few City tops with Messi on would get bought by that set of fans.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Everything you've said there is entirely possible so i can't argue with any of it. Like I say, it'd be massively exciting if it happened, but i just worry that we could end up with egg all over our faces if it backfired. Maybe I shouldn't worry about how we're perceived by others so much though.

Isco threads may be a running theme but they've nothing on Messi, who is to us what Sneijder is to them.

Which tells a delicious story in itself but the same outcome imo.

Well don't think about it then. Non-hospitality ticket revenue brings in probably around £25m a year so putting them up even 20% only brings in an extra £5m. We could sign any number of sponsors/partners for £5m a year with Messi in the team.

True, and all rather obvious. Which is precisely what will make the inevitable ticket and season ticket prices increases in such a scenario all the more repulsive, likewise those who will of course try and justify them as wholly necessary as per usual.

Well, as we haven't signed him and haven't put up ticket prices as a result, I wouldn't worry about it just yet. If we did sign him however and could sell 70,000 tickets for every game then I suspect ticket prices might rise simply due to demand.

Supporting City seems to be making you unhappy. You never say anything positive about us ever.
