That clause might exist because without it there's no way Messi ever leaves Barcelona without running his contract down. The initial agreement was probably made in happier times when there was a lot more faith from both parties that things would always be rosy.

Stupid yes, but it was probably put together at a time where the idea of Messi forcing his way out would be beyond imagination. It does look bad in hindsight.
