Messi has had no defensive workrate for years, tonight's performance is nothing new. In a team dominating the ball he is a killer, in a team that's under the cosh he's a liability.

So as we pretty much dominate the ball in every single game we play, are you advocating his signing?

I personally would love to see a motivated Messi at City for a couple of years. I suspect his current form is just due to mental fatigue at Barca.

They can't defend partly because they have passengers in attack. Silva covers much more distance than Messi and we still are very vulnerable defensively when he starts. Energy and pace matter a lot.

Do those 11 players working hard include Mahrez and/or Sane? His work rate isn’t considerably less than either of those and both of them have played for us at anfield.

Even a Messi jogging around the pitch for 90 minutes requires two people to mark him and probably a third to offer cover meaning there’s acres of space somewhere else for Kdb, Sterling, Aguero, Foden etc and in possession against low blocks he can shuffle it to one side and stick it in the corner from anywhere.

Messi’s problem at Barca is it’s all centred around him with nobody else to really worry about for the opposition. Suarez is well past it, Griezmann has been a disaster and dembele can’t get fit backed up with a pedestrian midfield. Stick him in our side and it’s frightening. With the exception of a player exchange unless it was Garcia and a few other expendable players I’d offer Barca whatever they wanted this summer to fund their rebuild. Never going to happen though

I'm 50/50 on the transfer myself, @tolmie's hairdoo has said the club had sponsors lined up to cover the whole deal and make it profitable financially but I would quite like to win it without him at least before he came in, and it would fuck with a lot of our players - Aguero's probably benched, KDB sees a lot less of the ball etc.

But it's ridiculous that people think he's not good enough when he's just come off a season that represents the best season of Aguero's goalsoring and KDB's assisting combined.
