Is it not still true that they literally must sell in order to renew Messi? What happens if they can’t get rid of Griezmann and Coutinho? Messi just sits in limbo?

It's about the wage bill. They're well over the wage bill cap and have to release/sell/loan players out just to keep Messi, and then there's the matter of affording the 4 new signings.

If they do not sort it out by the middle of August, Messi will not be a Barcelona player next season. He's not going to sit around. Messi wants to play next season. Yes, he's very loyal to Barcelona and his family loves it there, but they'll probably understand why Messi wants to go. If they don't sort it out, PSG and Man City will be in there with offers. At the moment, all they can do is sit back and be patient.

It does seem that Fabrizio's sources are not that reliable when it comes to Messi. He's probably getting them from someone who works well within the club, so obviously they're going to say it's near enough sorted. But in reality, it's not close to being sorted. Fabrizio has claimed several times that Messi has signed his contract and that it'll get announced.... it still hasn't been announced. Heck, he stated that Messi would sign his new contract after the Copa America. If Messi doesn't sign his new contract by this Friday or Saturday, you can pretty much claim that Fabrizio has no real sources in regards to Messi.

I can totally see he signed it already but cannot be announced until certain wages are removed from wage bill.

Highly doubt there is still any negotiating ongoing with Messi.

clearing the deadwood and selling some huge flops can take time tho but City is in only a passive role here, we may make a move if financially Barca cannot close the deal, but again we are way too nice and happy to wait weeks to let Barca sort their mess.

I would go to Messi camp and tell them our offer has a deadline of 20th of July, take it or leave it last thing we should do is wait around until Barca sorting their mess which can give a vibe to Messi that City is there for him always as plan B he really is not forced to take us "plan A" serious.

I am sure Barca would have had something in place about appearance bonuses given his recent injury record. However if they sold him the move on him being a regular starter and then go back on that word then there will be ill feeling
Might as well come back here.

Laporta has literally said the same thing for the past 7 weeks.

Has Laporte added that a dozen of the first team squad have been fired without notice ? Unless the league buckle there needs to be a huge player exodus to accommodate Messi and their other three new signings.

yeah this is basically the situation right now, and its whether barca are able to clear the wage bill or not

Absolutely this ^ it’s the equivalent of winning a competitive contract to deliver something at a set price and then when you’ve won the contract trying to renegotiate it - it fundamentally distorts the original tendering process and the whole tendering process needs to be restarted. They have gained an advantage by default and under false pretences.
