Is it not still true that they literally must sell in order to renew Messi? What happens if they can’t get rid of Griezmann and Coutinho? Messi just sits in limbo?
It's about the wage bill. They're well over the wage bill cap and have to release/sell/loan players out just to keep Messi, and then there's the matter of affording the 4 new signings.
If they do not sort it out by the middle of August, Messi will not be a Barcelona player next season. He's not going to sit around. Messi wants to play next season. Yes, he's very loyal to Barcelona and his family loves it there, but they'll probably understand why Messi wants to go. If they don't sort it out, PSG and Man City will be in there with offers. At the moment, all they can do is sit back and be patient.
It does seem that Fabrizio's sources are not that reliable when it comes to Messi. He's probably getting them from someone who works well within the club, so obviously they're going to say it's near enough sorted. But in reality, it's not close to being sorted. Fabrizio has claimed several times that Messi has signed his contract and that it'll get announced.... it still hasn't been announced. Heck, he stated that Messi would sign his new contract after the Copa America. If Messi doesn't sign his new contract by this Friday or Saturday, you can pretty much claim that Fabrizio has no real sources in regards to Messi.
