@bluealf someone, perhaps in the media thread copied a huge chunk of the article. It covered both Messi Rapey Ronny. What else was said?
The bit floating around on X yesterday and repeated a few posts above seem to suggest Pep tried hard to convince him not to come to City.
He definitely didn't in 2020.
He genuinely wanted to come and even submitted a request for his release, however, Barca refused it even though it was agreed in the contract.
As it was during COVID and the season had finished later, Barca claimed the deadline for the release clause had passed and was linked to a month rather than the end of the season.
That's not how the book states it went. They say City were even willing to pay his release clause but mard arse Messi had got what he wanted from Barca.

If you change 'didnt want to fight the club' to 'my dad's just got ne a brilliant deal from Barca, so Pep mate but I'm staying,' I'd agree with you. That sounds like an earlier attempt.
In the latter version Messi was allowed to leave for free at the end of the season but because of Covid delaying the end of the season, Barca claimed that clause had expired. Messi considered taking Barca to court over it but ultimately didn't want to end up fighting the club.
