Lisbon post match fan treatment and supporter services fan info

The post match over the top herding by the Portuguese police was the only negative thing about our whole trip.

To me it seemed unnecessary but that'd depend on how other English clubs supporters have been on trips to Lisbon.

Me and my wife had a couple of beers and a bifana in the area outside of the stadium where plenty of Sporting supporters were and had absolutely no issues at all. Many were friendly and initiated conversation with us. We don't wear colours and we were asked why by Sporting fans that has shirts and scarves on. My response was that it's was to attempt to avoid unwanted attention and get away from the game unnoticed by fans and police.

Their opinion was that English supporters have a bad reputation and there's always violence and aggression when an English side visits. I put it to them that the vast majority (of blues) aren't violent or aggressive and are here to enjoy themselves.

The thing is, we've all seen it happen when we play the likes of Liverpool, ManUre, Chelsea, Villa etc. The typical English plastic football hooligans come out in force with the 'had a few pints bravado and posturing'. Sadly the majority who don't behave like they own the place end up getting tarnished with the same brush and subsequently get the poor treatment dished out by the authorities.

I'm not saying it's right but it's to be expected sadly.

I take it that it was your City Paderne flag that got taken Rascal?
Yes pal it was.

4 of us sat outside a bar near Oriente station, was waiting to check into our digs, flag was on top of my bag, about half a dozen of them all in black, balaclavas etc ran past and stole it, ran up the road and sang Sporting to us.

We just laughed and got another beer in,

Post match lock-in was ludicrous as was the silly scaremongering by city about the ‘ultras’ stop and avoiding home fans at all costs. Anyone that is used to going away with city home and abroad hardly has Lisbon as one of the ones to watch. But I did hear loads of younger lads worrying in the escort as if there was any reason to be concerned and then realising that the so called threat consisted of about 50 of their fans munching hot dogs by the metro and smiling. I know a few bottles got chucked around beforehand but an hour and a half from the game finishing to getting back into civilisation was overkill and the club should have warned those of us with hotels nearer the stadium and airport that we would have to make our way all the way back. Portugal is a good friendly trip and it’s time to start giving English fans a bit more respect that they can behave themselves

the only highlight of the Kettling operation after the game was hearing someone shouting at the robocops “What are you doing to us, you’re meant to be on our side we were allies at the Armada” a great history lesson for me as I had no idea previously so thanks for the info
Whenever I see a crowd of City fans in an away ground it always brings the Duke of Wellington to mind. The night before Waterloo, as depicted in film of the same name, he was asked if he thought his troops would scare the French. He replied that he didn't know, but they sure as fuck scared the living daylights out of him.

Anybody 'do' Waterloo, or was it just a prequel to York away?

Wankers. Great reaction though.

Is it just a European thing this nicking flags? Never heard a blue or group of blues bragging about nicking a flag of the opposition.

Metro was fine. Walked in, no need to pay. Train left almost immediately we got there and didn't stop until Rossio Square.
Sounds like a plan? Special train for City fans? Bit like the wait on the buses at Porto as the airport couldn't cope with 20 flightloads of people arriving at the same time...

A good idea badly done?

But you'd have thought the Porto police would have told Lisbon that low key is better.

It was still a brilliant trip! One of the best Euro aways.
It’s definitely up there for me. Loved the place. Wasn’t even that hammered (for a change at a Euro away!). And the game was mint too. Netting was a bit annoying.

After the game was like stepping back in time and for that reason I secretly quite enjoyed it. We peeled off and doubled back at the Metro station as the queue was moving too slowly and Old Bill had made themselves scarce by this point - and got an Uber within about ten minutes. Looking at the mither at the other end, it was a serendipitous choice.

Thought the police presence was discernibly prolific and all were properly tooled up too. Big numbers on the ground. There was a slight hint of menace about them, but never felt like it was likely to combust at any point.

Probably OTT but you don’t know what intel they’d had.

Waterloo? Waterloo!

you’re not a true blue unless you were stood on that hill in Kent with Harold, having battered a few from United’s homeland a week before and marched south.

Think my wife and I may have been in same bar, we don’t wear shirts either but I did have a kippax sweat shirt on but they obviously would have no idea about that!

Enjoyed my first euro away, great experience met some great fellow blues, the escort from the robocops afterwards was OTT but sort of expected really.
