Liverpool (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Just watched our 3rd goal back and I genuinely dont think that Szoboszlai was getting there

The clip from behind the goal gives a really good view of it, and i just think its rolling in regardless of the pulling of shirts
I was thinking that, guess it was just reactive of Haaland

Cherki booting the ball over the bar from the free-kick was one of the best bits of game management you'll ever see. It was 99% guaranteed that the ref was going to blow for full-time when the ball was in the air from the goal kick. A short free kick might have seen us quickly lose the ball and Liverpool booting in high towards our box, in which case the ref would most likely (it being Anfield and all) allowed that passage of play to continue.
There was a conference before he took it and he immediately looked over to the bench after it - definitely had been directed to blam it over. As you say, great game management

We'll probably never know, but I disagree - facing the way he was when he received the ball, Cherki knew Haaland was there and knew he'd beat anyone for speed over that distance. So he knocked it into that space and turned it into a race that only Haaland would win.
I see where your coming from but .... Cherki faces an open goal ,he is ,if your with me on this ,a greedy, needy type player.....his 1st thought would be to score.
Not pass.

He was one of our best players, covering nearly as much ground as Bernado, winning tackles, ghosting past people and generally causing problems. He's better in midfield than at full back and from what I've seen is looming like a mainstay of our midfield for years to come.

That's the game I was watching.
Me too. He has shored up the mid totally.

Well spotted, and also, from a goal kick its much more likely that we would have won a header which should then have resulted in the whistle

Letting them play out from the back may have resulted in the referee allowing them one last build up

The freekick and sending off only benefits the team who committed the offence on this occasion. This is not in the spirit of the game when a goal has subsequently been scored. If it was 1-1 and this was the outcome (us having a freekick), it means cheats prosper.

A goal should overrule any proceeding infringement. e.g. a penalty should not be given if the ball ends up in the net in the same motion.
The goal would have overruled any preceding infringement except for the fact that Haaland made one as well. That resets it.

So if the same situation happened 4 times in one game.
We get 4 red cards and a 0-0 draw. Thats how farcical it is.
The whole point of football is to score a goal. Ruling them out to give a red card is not.

Big players can have 10 days rest after Wednesday night,no game next midweek and only Salford on Saturday so they should be all good for week on Saturday v Newcastle.

I might of missed this already, but did Haaland not get a second yellow for the foul, as it goes back to the first offence? Even though it was Haalands foul that took it back…
Haaland only got booked for taking his shirt off after the penalty as far as I'm aware .... the Liverpool player was red carded for denying Haaland a clear goalscoring opportunity
