please no more O'Reily in midfield. just stop it now.
For the EDS, Nico O'R was incredible in midfield. Hoping he gets stronger there but he has been coached to play elsewhere. Looks great at times. Needs to be consistent and stronger

Worst decision ever given in big game

Goal of the season ruled out because their player gets a red card off the ball.

Absolutely fucked off with it, if they Arse or Rags do that it is given.

Ref had no decision to make.
It just turns it into pantomime farce. I assumed he had played the advantage. You've played the advantage, the goal is scored, so why then pull it back after the event? If he hadn't played the advantage and stopped it for the foul then why didn't he blow for the foul straight away?

Mark Pougatch summed it up, how can a player get a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity when the ball ends up in the back of the net? It's just stupid.

What angered me is what if they had gone up the other end and scored? And it still might be significant at the end of the season.

Have to say though there were two or three occasions when Cherki should have passed to Haaland.

Here's a thought...

Cherki blasted that free kick over the bar, game restarts with a goal kick and Alison hoofs it up field, one bounce and Salah latches on to it and buries it in the top corner... There would have been a fucking riot.

Could have happened in all fairness…thought that was dreadful by Cherki even after all the captains discussing to keep the ball during the free kick…anyhow all well that ends well!

Eh? Var always initiate the review.
Nope. VAR cannot start a review, they can only recommend a review. In football 'recommend' is advice, 'initiate' is a command. A bit pedantic I know - but it matters within the laws of the game. Only a referee can initiate a review.

Think the ref probably told them time was virtually up so he deliberately leathered it high into the stand, knowing the game was effectively over.

Yep, if the ref deemed that Haaland had also committed a foul then the correct decision was made. However, what I think is slightly confusing for many fans is that the ref confidently awarded the goal as an 'on-field' decision. By doing so, it appears that he allowed advantage to be played for the foul on Haaland, and didn't warrant the tug by Haaland to be sufficient to award a foul against Haaland.

It appears that the ref didn't initiate the review, as he seemed quite clear with his on-field decision, therefore we must conclude that VAR suggested in his ear-piece that he goes to the screen (VAR cannot initiate a review - they can only suggest one). The ref could have still told VAR to do one and stuck with his on-field decision, and I don't think either team would have bothered too much. That's the way it is - ultimately the correct decision but it doesn't half take some enjoyment out of the game.
Generally I agree,
but Pawson just pointed to the centre circle with a quite shy gesture.

I think he felt that was a complex and tricky situation and so gave the goal to then go the monitor to have more time and replays for a clear decision. We don't know what he would have done without VAR but he did see both fouls and shouldn't need VAR to come to the obvious decision that we have now, and is correct.

We have rules. Guehi can't play the final for the rule in place,
and Szobo had to walk and will be suspended. Next dipper opponents will also insist on that rule in place and him being suspended.
It's not all about us.

That's what angered me about the decision. How can a player get a red card for preventing a goalscoring opportunity when the ball ends up in the back of the net?

I assumed he'd played the advantage, if not then why didn't he blow for the free kick straight away? Granted, it didn't matter (but might have done if it hadn't been the final few seconds), but that goal difference might be important later on.

Yes that was my take on it too.

THere would be none of this nonsense if they scrapped this VAR shit. It's never been fit for purpose.

That's why my issue is with the laws of the game, and I have sympathy for the officials (I feel dirty saying that). It is the correct decision, but it doesn't feel right, nor fair, nor within the spirit of the game.

I imagine if the goal had been allowed to stand, there would have been uproar in the media about it being awarded (damned if they do, damned if they don't).

It's hypothetical, but if the score was 1:1 and the roles were reversed, we'd all be screaming for the goal to be disallowed.

64 today, that's my birthday present, had a great day, couldn't watch it, we've won 4 times there since I was born.

I've been there plenty, seen the odd draw, fucking hate the place, so very happy this evening.
Congratulations
The Beatles (think Macca is an Evertonian ?) wrote a bit of an odd song about your age though ?
