Liverpool (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

We played okay to an extent but Liverpool had full control of that game for 90 minutes and the result was never in doubt. They haven't had a more comfortable game here in decades. That was a sad performance to see that they can just hold us at arms length like an adult holding a kids head as they're trying to swing punches towards them.

Pep didn't set us up properly yet again. We've got all that pace upfront and yet play too slowly to utilise any of it. our wingers had good games, they beat their markers regularly but then found a crowded box and closed down space where they might have looked to cut inside everytime because we played too slowly in the build up and allowed them to reset. Without haalands presence, the only chance we had was to hit them fast and we didnt do it hence the lack of any genuine goal threat.

look how they attacked, they did exactly that against us and it led to plenty of chances for them despite a minimal amount of the ball.

Most of the players today put in decent individual performances but pep has set the team up poorly again.
How would you have set them up?

Absolutley! They've given us years of magnificent times and endless trophies. It's sad to see kev and gundo like this, just like it was with yaya....nowt u can do when your legs go.... one season too far for most of these guys it seems.........but I think we've made a decent start in rebuilding in the jan window....we need another good summer window and I don't think we'll be a million miles away from being a top side again. We just need the right players in the centre of the park....its a cliche but games really are still won and lost in midfield and ours just has run out of steam. But I trust us to get things right in the future! :-)
Let's hope there's no transfer ban then

You perhaps could have used a better reference given his colour but I know you didn't mean it like that
It meant nothing other than a saying thats being used for decades.

Two points I'd like to make:

1. If you know I didn't mean it "like that" then why post it.

2. It's disappointing that that's the first thing that comes to your mind.

We'll leave it there.

They didn't really need to play well though, did they? They knew their defence is effective, and would keep on snuffing us us out just long enough for them to add a couple of goals and knock us out!
My thoughts exactly. Why go absolutely gung ho against a team that haven't got a clue.

They coasted that game. Even if we scored I reckon they would have turned on the burners and scored a couple more in reply.

Total game management from the players and Slot.

Like every week
He’s waffling until the end of the season , he knows this team is done , at least afford him what most sane minded fan thinks - this season is finished , what do you want him to say ? We can still win the title ? Top four , fingers crossed the fa cup.
He’s putting a team out to suit our style of play , with big players either injured or just being plain past there best.

Pure waffle from Pep in the post match interview..
I agree. But what do you expect him to say? That we were weak, shit and that we got exactly what we deserved? That ain't going to happen. It'd be hilarious if he did come out with that, though. Not sure the great and the good in Abu Dhabi would be too impressed, mind.

We’ll be fine. If that’s the best team in the country, we didn’t disgrace ourselves.

Stick Akanji, Dias, Stones, Rodri and Haaland in that side today… who knows.

The future is Blue.
Akanji and Stones? Don’t think they would’ve made much difference to be honest.

Am I going mad?

I thought the better team lost today and if Haaland's on the pitch we get at least a point

Two individual mistakes and a ridiculously lucky deflection ends up in our goal. Absolutely nothing drops for us for the whole match

I'm getting pelters on a whatsapp group for suggesting this (admittedly hardly any blues on there)... but I stand by it

Sadly I did think that we would win today, a win would have pushed us into 3rd place, and on the coattails of Arsenal….

I saw the line up and thought ok maybe not!

Now Pep has probably forgotten more than I’ll ever know, we don’t see what happens in training and around the place. What is evident though is that it seems we are very easy to set up against for potential reward. Rigid defence, hard work and breaking at pace has seen us being very vulnerable, the better teams exploit us at will, the lesser teams are also seeing some success.

At this moment I would (probably along with every city fan) would take CL qualification, and if we could win one of the FA cup or World Club.

Big decisions for next season have probably already been taken, easy to say goodbye and thanks to the out of contract players. Probably easy enough to accept deals on the younger fringe players, the established ones one high wages maybe could prove a little more difficult.

Hopefully we can get the business done early, though the world club cup could hinder that?

I’m sure we’ll be back challenging on all fronts next season

The frustrating thing is I think Liverpool are bang average. They didn’t play well, we just didn’t fucking remotely get into the game.

It really pisses me off.

That’s the worst Liverpool team we’ve played in 10 years and we made it piss easy for them.
I said a few weeks back that they have an effective system and are very efficient without catching the eye. That is what we saw today. On the other hand I'm effing dumbstruck at our defensive showings this season. Those 2 goals today were more or less assists from us and we just don't learn. We look bang average.

Cant hide the inability to score goals but thought the players gave it their best. They never gave up. We know it's not our year and tbh I think it was a respectable scoreline for where the 2 teams are now. Keep saying it but Lewis is not good enough. Again he fumbled causing a corner for their first. Decent Championship player for my money.

I thought Liverpool played very well, Slot has got them organised and they can play a number of ways and adapt in game.

That last 20 minutes was humiliating in another manner today, they just let us have the ball and knew we’d go side to side and ultimately give up a couple of chances playing ourselves into trouble which we did.

We are looking a very stubborn side now, set in our ways and introducing new players to do the same thing. I may be wrong but I’ve not seen anything to suggest we are trying new things at any point this season. The wide players are perhaps more direct and taking risks but if we are slow and turgid getting into the box as we are, they are just running into another wall of opposition players. That high line is looking more and more ridiculous by the game and I’m sure opponents can’t believe we are persisting with it.
