Liverpool (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

I thought we did ok without ever threatening in the final third. For all the good work Doku and Savinho did, there wasn't ever a point where I thought we were going to score.

Liverpool did what they needed to do, let us have possession most of the second half as they knew we weren't going to do anything with it .

I got the impression they had several gears in reserve if needed, and if we had managed to get one back then they'd have gone at us again and got a third .

Sad to watch KdB now. All good things come to an end and he really shouldn't be anywhere near a starting spot whilst we've still got 4th place to fight for.

We didn't play well but you can see that if we were at full strength we would have carried a big threat to Liverpool. See the number of times Savinho and Doku beat their full backs but there was no one in the box
We don't put it in the box when Haaland is playing.
Doku's crosses up there with Navas, no end product or first defender.

The only reason they are winning the title this year is because we have been poor
They have had very little in competition this season. Much like their last one they are strolling to it totally stress free. Contrast some of our wins where we had to win 18 on the bounce, come back from 2 nip down with 15 mins to go and nearly finish me off

What has happened to Foden? There is a severe lack of energy in his game. He cowers from challenges. His first touch is average now and he rarely takes players on. He really should be hitting peak levels now and driving this team on, but I'm not sure he's even deserving of the starting 11. He really has lost his way this year.

Looked toothless tonight. Marmoush was never really in a goalscorers position. Doku was constantly beating TAA but nobody was in a position to want the ball and score.

Apparently, we were exceptional today.....
It's an exageration, but I thought we played OK, without creating much, I thought liverpool were very good, clever corner for the first goal (not well defended), got the lead and defended it very well. They were more up for it than us I thought, but it was league clincher for them after arsenal losing yesterday.

We do need to look at that team and how young it was, bar a couple, the future is bright, the recent history is also pretty bright.

Nobody should be angry with the team today, yet I've seen "shit show" mentioned, ridiculous.

I think the problem on both sides is not due to Doku or Savinho alone, there is simply no one that links up with them that they can pass to. The only options are Rico/Gvardiol or to pass it to a central midfielder like KDB or Kovacic
I agree today that Doku didn’t have much to aim at, but 18 months has passed now and he’s never linked up consistently with anyone playing centrally. Maybe it’s the system we’re playing in. I just don’t think he’s good enough for a side at the top table.

If he’s getting into positions where he’s able to deliver a ball into the box and nobody is there he should be fucking raging at the rest of the team and he doesn’t.

The final third of the pitch and available options was contrasting for both teams. They moved the ball quick and we moved it slowly.

The days of constantly probing and finding a way has this season often not worked. Today the wide players did well but had nothing to aim for in the box.

Strange tactic to have Rico marking Van Dijk at corners.

Yes we’re off form, yes we have injuries, yes we’re off the pace.
But, we’ve just spent six or seven years playing at an incredibly high level, achieving greatness, records abound, achievements nobody else has ever done, don’t ever forget that, or underestimate it and, what it takes physically and mentally to maintain it.
Some players have been breaking down physically for over 18 months, most are now physically and mentally spent, even the younger ones.
KDB, Gundo, Walker, Stones, Ake, Akanji, Berbardo, Kovotic, Ederson, Ortega are all pushing or at 30 plus years of age.
Our recent signings and the rest of the squad are young, early to mid 20’s.
Pep signed an extension to develop those players into the next steam train, that’s started, the coaching, mentoring and developing of his players.
By the time he leaves, we’ll be back on song, not a ship wreck.
Relax, chill out, stop the winning because we need to recover, strengthen and build.
Plenty will go in the summer, plenty will arrive.

Sums up the direction of the club since Istanbul, total complacency has set in .
I think it's more to do with the PL trying to slow us down.

Looks like the money is being spent on Lawyers, rightly so as you need the best to defend against corrupted crooks,
and less on recruitment and coaching.

A lot of people have left the Club over the last couple of years but have they been replaced with quality?

Probably kept players longer than we would have liked as well.

No way should KDB, Stones or Gundo be starting big games, they are fooked after half an hour, that's if you get the long out of Stones.

Didn't think they were owt special today, but they didn't have to be.

Robertson and Arnold were beaten time and time again but we had no one attacking with the wide men.

Yes let's single out the one player who was a consistent threat out there today for us. Contributed more than Foden, De Bruyne and Marmoush put together.
He was actually no threat at all, zero end product, and not improving either, he excites briefly, then fails miserably virtually every time, drives me mad, certainly has no "end product".

He played well until the minute he needed to deliver something useful.

Looked toothless tonight. Marmoush was never really in a goalscorers position. Doku was constantly beating TAA but nobody was in a position to want the ball and score.
Not one of our forwards ever try to nick in front of the defender when the ball is wide. It frustrates the fuck out of me.

Get across the man and you'll get a tap in.

Problem for us today is we conceded a soft goal against a Liverpool side that were happy to defend for long periods. They could sit deep and counter but there was very little space in behind and when we got to the byline there was up to 10 Liverpool players in their own box.

Doku was a threat but there was very little movement in front. He was always trying to thread passes through massed Liverpool ranks. Twice we got Marmoush in, when offside he finished well, when onside he didn’t. We didn’t move the ball quick enough which made it very difficult to pull them out of shape.

Think we needed a lot more from KDB and Foden.

Not a terrible performance but frustrating to concede such a poor opener and it looked as though we were never going to score today

Thought it was a decent enough performance overall, midfield is still - hopefully - a work in progress. Khusanov looks good value, Doku was excellent and Savinho second half. Why no near post runs from our midfielders, to give the wide players another option.
Would broadly agree. They were the better team and looking more and more like champs.
We are in a rebuilding phase and both teams can take positives.
Uzbekibauer, Nico and Marmoosh are very solid buys.
The youth worked hard and had the pace we have been screaming for. Were we better than Liverpool no.
However, we missed Rodri, Haaland and Dias not starting from the start. Liverpool was screaming abdabs when van shite was out for a few matches a few years ago.
Take out Salad, van shite and Terrence Trent Darby, would they be where they are? No.
Next year they may well be out of the picture. We were 3 years younger per player and 100s of PL matches experience off them.
Plenty of positive take aways and let's be honest, we aren't going to win the league, so start the rebuild now. Uzbekibauer, Nico and Marmoosh have started less than 10 matches in total, we are 4th, in a Champs League slot and enough teams to beat to get back in that comp next year.
Summer and more players are coming.
Disappointing result, a few fragile egos going to take a hammering at work, oh yes.
Looking to the future, no worries here.
