I just watched the full replay. quite contrary to the ideas that the game was lost due to poor defense not the attack, I think city lost to liverpool for the bad attack.
one thing should be made very clear up front, the high possession rate was not a good sign for city's attack. especially when Haaland is not there. City got high possession rate only because we don't have speed or effective incessive passes. City player had to just pass outside a defense formation by Liverpool.
my remark on the formation is that the city attack was quite miss-matched. the two wing forwards Doku and Savinho were very ineffective, especially Doku. Doku is such a one trick pony that he was very predictable and he never really found any chance to square the ball in as he spent ages at the sideline trying to do his tricks and the box is packed with defenders sprinkled with light weight city player of Marmouth Foden and Savinho. there is not a single city player that can control a rushed-in pass and follow with a good assist or shot. Doku must learn to release the ball as a race of milliseconds when necessary. his ball controlling skill had done nothing good for City in his predictable play.
to me the players that should be replaced in the liverpool game was Doku, Foden, and Lewis. Foden and Lewis were too lightweight and like all academy golden boys in EPL, they are only good for one or two things but not well-rounded players that can carry out certain task independently. Foden doesn't have pace or ball retaining skill enough to receive passes and keep the gears ticking. same problem in Lewis. he cannot do the basics of the fullback role. he is good when nobody notice him in the attacking half but not when pressed in his own half not to mention chasing down any player. a half-spent KDB is more useful than any of the three young players. KDB just need more room of tolerance for his risky attacking moves. he was not 100% perfect in his prime either but now the team is lack of all round players to keep the game in balance.
