Liverpool (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

I just watched the full replay. quite contrary to the ideas that the game was lost due to poor defense not the attack, I think city lost to liverpool for the bad attack.
one thing should be made very clear up front, the high possession rate was not a good sign for city's attack. especially when Haaland is not there. City got high possession rate only because we don't have speed or effective incessive passes. City player had to just pass outside a defense formation by Liverpool.

my remark on the formation is that the city attack was quite miss-matched. the two wing forwards Doku and Savinho were very ineffective, especially Doku. Doku is such a one trick pony that he was very predictable and he never really found any chance to square the ball in as he spent ages at the sideline trying to do his tricks and the box is packed with defenders sprinkled with light weight city player of Marmouth Foden and Savinho. there is not a single city player that can control a rushed-in pass and follow with a good assist or shot. Doku must learn to release the ball as a race of milliseconds when necessary. his ball controlling skill had done nothing good for City in his predictable play.

to me the players that should be replaced in the liverpool game was Doku, Foden, and Lewis. Foden and Lewis were too lightweight and like all academy golden boys in EPL, they are only good for one or two things but not well-rounded players that can carry out certain task independently. Foden doesn't have pace or ball retaining skill enough to receive passes and keep the gears ticking. same problem in Lewis. he cannot do the basics of the fullback role. he is good when nobody notice him in the attacking half but not when pressed in his own half not to mention chasing down any player. a half-spent KDB is more useful than any of the three young players. KDB just need more room of tolerance for his risky attacking moves. he was not 100% perfect in his prime either but now the team is lack of all round players to keep the game in balance.

Was weird, we attack their box it’s 3 v 10 , they attack our box it’s 3 v 3
That’s all down to mentality.

At one point yesterday one of their players sprinted from the half way line down the channel for Salah to reverse pass into him. Not one of our players tracked him, or went over to stop the run in behind.

It’s got nothing to do with fitness. Some players I’ll give the benefit of doubt to, but young players like Sav, Doku, Phil, Rico, Gvardiol should be quicker than what they are showing.

No desire for me. I think they look at the older players plodding around and think fuck it. Why should I bother if he won’t/can’t.

Totally missed the game last night as on Holiday in Goa and was in a village that had no coverage. Heard some commentary but internet dodgy However my neighbours at home are both Dippers and had a WhatsApp this morning saying both teams played well, it must true and be a first as they are biased bastards. Back home in time for the Cup on Saturday. That matters now, the next game is the most important.

Sports bar, Candolim beach road. Dunno if it's still there but was once my favourite place for watching footy.
eDit; now called ''3 Crownz''

Starting with the loss to Spurs in October we went P13, W1, D3, L9. Champions of England going 13 games with 1 win.

Yes, I'd say that's falling off a cliff. We've barely recovered since and were it not for the points we gained early in the season we'd be nowhere near 4th.

And unless something drastic changes, we won't be staying in the top 4 either. And honestly, I don't see any drastic changes coming. I think Pep will carry on using KDB when the guy is shot after 5 minutes, carry on relying on Gundugan, carry on leaving Foden on when he's clearly having a mare or cant be arsed, carry on playing Lewis ahead of Grealish. Carry on not making subs when it plainly isn't working. etc etc etc.

And we will carry on dominating possession, labouring away fruitlessly in front of the oppositions' packed defenses and then watching them score for fun when they have the ball for 2 minutes. With this hopeless formula, right now there is barely a team I would be confident we'd beat.

Sorry but that's how I see it. Of course we should and will fight on, and it's far from the end of the world. But this season is finished IMO. I just hope next season is better.
And of course our injury crisis has nothing to do with how we play. FFS !!!!

Pisses me off. No Settled defence means we need to adapt. Sit deeper, kill the space behind and play longer .

Phil and Kevin, for what-ever reason, are not the players they were. KdB misplacing simple passes is not a "legs gone" sympton, imo, PF showing signs of burn-out (battle fatigue to use a military term) definitely not a "cant be arsed" issue. Over the last 8 or 9 years, with only a handful of exceptions, we have been the better team irrespective of the results, no matter the opposition. Halfway through the last season, and all through this one, it has been the opposite imo, the swagger has gone, there's been nothing to swagger about really, in the poorest season of prem football for years, The barcode false dawn was as much to do with them expecting to overwhelm City with all-out attacking, imo, and the X-factor that is Marmoush. The FA cup is do-able, the big one via top four is harder and more injuries would make it more so...

The performance wasn’t bad yesterday, overall it was ok. But we just didn’t have any threat. The decision not to sign back up for Haaland is baffling.

But the one moment I tore my hair out was in 78th minute when Pep brought out Dias, Kovacic and Gundogan.

I understand why he took Ake off. But just bring Reis on. We were never getting back in that game and Lpool just seeing it out.

But then why bring Kovacic and Gundogan on. 2 players who have been big reasons for our poor season. I feel sorry for Nico o’Reilly. Why not give the lad 20 mins he won’t be worse than the other 2. And we paid £50+m for Nunes. Not saying he is good enough but why not give him some minutes in midfield?

Liverpool did to us what Arsenal tried to when they came to the Etihad

Grab a shitty set piece goal and park the bus

Before the first goal, we looked decent. They were getting forward here and there, but they didn't look too threatening. We didn't either, but there was space to play into

They scored early, and that was that. With no Haaland and the struggling De Bruyne and Foden pairing, there wasn't much we could do

The differences with the Arsenal game are that we were fitter back then, had a man advantage, and critically, were only a single goal down, which changes the game dynamic as the match draws to a close

I think Pep is having a hard time being as ruthless as he probably needs to be with club legends who have been a huge part of his success over the years. Understandable I suppose, but the irony is he's exposing how far they've fallen from their peak. Sad to see.
I agree. I often wonder if the circumstances of Sergio's departure play a part in this. As I saw it at the time it appeared Pep was being ruthless in dispensing with his services, and I think the majority of fans like myself were being sentimental and would have been happy to see Sergio being given some sort of new contract. Then we saw Pep's tears for Sergio on the last day and his ' he cannot be replaced" speech. I think he really felt that and there was some guilt there on his part. In hindsight it appears he was right, Sergio was done and he made the right decision but I wonder if that emotion has affected his decision making since as we have not seen that degree of ruthlessness and he has certainly held on to some of senior players to long. Hindsight is a wonderful thing !

Apart from Rodri who of our injured players are going to make any significant improvements…..(maybe Bobb)

Stones is never going to be fit for consecutive games and Akanji has had a stinker of a season.

We can no longer hide behind the injuries !

Positives ( tongue in cheek)
Must have really pissed off Arsenal fans.
As Dippers have shared the last 7 PL Champions with us, we get to now share the last 8 with them.
Look forward to the media and fans of other clubs calling the PL boring as one team is so far in the lead

All hunky dory then.

Liverpool were playing in second gear for me, had we actually managed to have a meaningful shot at goal, they'd have upped it a notch. It wasn't terrible you are right. Much better than the other drummings we have been on the end of but it is ultimately another defeat, another game looking lost for creative ideas and boring sideways passing. Lewis, Foden and Kev all terrible. Hard to find many positives during this time.
Liverpool are miles better than us this season. We are closer to United and West Ham in 15th and 16th than we are Liverpool in 1st. In fact we are almost as far behind Liverpool as Wolves are behind us.

We had 7 players playing yesterday who either werent here or weren’t important players for us as recently as the treble season, 3 have been here for 3 games.
Those who’ve been here (like you say, Foden and De Bruyne) aren’t playing well.

All of our leaders are either injured, didn’t play, havent been playing well, are past their best and haven’t been a big part of this season… Dias Stones Rodri Gündoğan BSilva and Haaland didn’t start, Gündoğan BSilva and De Bruyne haven’t been playing well, bar Haaland they haven’t really been a big part of any good we’ve done this season because they’ve been out too much or just past it.

Considering all that, we did fine yesterday. It was a decent performance from an inexperienced team. It wasn’t all boring sideways passing, our wingers skinned their full backs all game and we worried them more than I’ve seen most teams do… until the last thing we did with some very poor crossing/passing/shooting.

It was frustrating but I think people are acting like this is our treble team who’ve nose dived, when really it’s an experimental newly put together half a team in its infancy.
Add Reis for Aké, possibly Cambiasso for Lewis, possibly Wirtz for De Bruyne, Haaland for Foden and bring Rodri back into the fold, and you’re talking about the team of the future just starting out, rather than the team of the past coming to an end.
