Liverpool (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Having a massive amount of possession with nothing to show for it, goals wise or even one decent opportunity being created is the slow, boring build up. Once wide yes, Doku especially tried it but to get to that point we have probably made 20 passes and allowed their whole team back to get into shape. We are dull and boring to watch, we have been even in the early part of the season when winning. This next team hopefully is exciting and reignites something with us fans too because what is served up currently is the reason the atmosphere is flat.
But Liverpool parking the bus wasn't boring?

I feel a bit sorry for Doku and Savinho. In a normal team when a winger has beaten his full back there is some space in which to place a pass to a team mate. Because of our painfully slow build up, when our wingers beat their full back they are faced with another 7 or 8 defenders who have had time to jog back to defend their goal, leaving them with no team mate in a space to receive the ball. I just don't know what they are supposed to do. Pass it backwards? Pass it into a crowded area where it will be intercepted? Or keep on dribbling until they lose the ball? Don't blame those two if their efforts come to nothing because it's not their fault.

It's not as if you couldn't expect them to get to the byline. They did it most times. If Real Madrid were scouting TAA yesterday the valuation went down.

Got to give some praise for Liverpool, they were so compact whenever we attacked, but still managed to break with pace and often outnumber us at our end. They worked really hard and all put in a defensive shift. They were the hungry, and the definition of humble.

We've got a load of players who run forwards twice as fast as they run back to defend. Until that changes again we're not be top level.
Yes agree with all of that. And as much as I have absolutely detested them for the last 7 years, and because we are so off the pace, they deserve that title more than the not so humble shysters managed by Lego head. However I don't want them to retain ( back to back) and if we have still not upped our game hope someone like Forest or the Barcodes could spring a surprise.

They didn't park the bus. They had shape and sat back at times as that nullifies us instantly. Having an early lead they didn't need to do anything else, but they still made it 2-0 and an offside away from a third. It is called being controlled from Liverpool and when they attacked, they attacked with purpose. We gain possession and then stop moving, allowing every man of theirs to get back, every week. So yeah, we are boring as fuck to watch and have been for a while. I still love and support us but we are dull.

I agree with you mate. With slow build up play, we can have possession deep in the opponents half, but with them set up to defend, it's almost impossible for us to score. And then when we inevitably lose the ball, we are NOT set up to defend, and we concede often. We see this happening nearly every week. This is (obviously) why we miss Rodri so much - not only did he protect our back 4 superbly, he actually found killer passes too. It's no coincidence our stats with and without him are like chalk and cheese.

What I find really frustrating is that we are so drilled in the importance of keeping the ball, when we do occasionally break at speed on our opponents, we invariably approach their penalty area, and then stop and pass it backwards. Does my head in!
Another problem that has set in is this conceding possession when under no real pressure from an opposing player. It's been on show a lot, although I'm not saying it should ever happen obviously. It just kills all the momentum, and on far too many occasions ends up with us having to defend for our lives to not concede.

I did forget about Haaland to be fair
No worries mate
I actually agree with your main point, but an in- form Rodri and Haaland walk into virtually every team in world football

Sadly we've then got a huge drop and the fact that the new signings have probably been our most consistent performers in recent games, probably says more about Foden and Bernardo's fall from the elite level.

Like he said. It wasn't just against Liverpool.

And Liverpool didn't park the bus. They were hardly hanging on for dear life. They just sat in and put their feet up, conserving their energy for the next game. Plus They created far better chances than us.

We have been very average albeit for half a dozen games this season.

And I agree we are boring and dull most games this season. There is more excitement when we lose the ball watching us run round like headless chickens than when we have the ball.

This high line with players that look like they are towing a caravan is also suicidal.

If we win the APT Part 2 Newcastle will probably win the league next year. ;)

Probably - but at 2-0 UP, away from home (job done, move onto the next challenge with minimum energy expenditure) you could also call it professional?
I'd love a run of boring wins, please...

Pointless wasting energy against us when its the time of the season we're conserving energy is the best, they didn't even get out of 1st gear yesterday. I think if they needed to they could of easily gone up a few gears and given us a hammering.

I presume you're not including Haaland as an injured player, but I fear that he's going to be out for longer than we were led to believe

It might not have made any difference yesterday but a left footed Haaland attacking the near post would have at least given Doku an option
Except Haaland never attacks the near post, and always goes to the back post.

Every week ?

Last week we beat the team on the same points as us 4-0, I assume you missed that ?
Sorry, almost every week. Is that better. We are boring to watch and very easy to combat and defend against. We have seen it all season, the odd times we have played a different way, Chelsea and Newcastle has resulted in success, but then yesterday we revert to type. Just as we did in Madrid.

But Liverpool parking the bus wasn't boring?
Anyone can set up like that against us - its pretty much guaranteeing at least a point to the sides that do.

We can't break it down, we can't keep up with the counters from it.
Why wouldn't teams do it?

We're playing the same way we have when winning stuff. Are you sure you're not getting mixed up with we're just not winning at the moment.

Apart from Rodri who of our injured players are going to make any significant improvements…..(maybe Bobb)

Stones is never going to be fit for consecutive games and Akanji has had a stinker of a season.

We can no longer hide behind the injuries !
Don't tell me that injuries to players like HAARLAND, Stones, Akanji, Bernardo, plus players that had to play carrying injuries like Ake and Dias, shouldn't make any difference. Plus the new players that haven't even had time to bed in yet. As you mentioned missing all season injuries to RODRI and Bobb. City don't have clones to replace these players and I certainly don't think City are hiding behind this problem. But there are quite a few City fans who think we should be at a permanent standard as if putting in replacement players shouldn't change anything on the pitch. Strange way of thinking !!!!

Yes exactly, and what has happened since then. Teams have got better, they have realised the best way to combat us and are working effectively. You evolve, staying stuck in one way of playing results in this. The way the 100 points team played isn't the same as the treble side. Miles different in fact, Pep adapted well during that treble season, innovated and came up with 4 centre halves in the back 4. It worked and now the time has come to not focus on having all of the possession, by doing so you allow all of their team to get back, get into shape and then we need an eye of the needle type pass to create something. It is why we find ourselves passing sideways with no urgency a lot, it is why we find our players grouped up on the edge of the box.

It has come full circle, our best play this season has been attacking fast, direct and with purpose. Going back to the centurions style and attacking teams with less numbers at the back. Everybody complains when teams sit against us ( why wouldn't they when we can't break them down) so it is then on us that when we win the ball back we move forward quickly and as a team. Watch back the first 5 minutes yesterday. We had two chances to do so and chose to hold the ball up and delay the attack. What has worked in the past won't always work in the future. Other teams are more physical and more athletic, they get up and down a lot more and get their rest when we are attacking. A Spurs player said it after they tonked us 4 nil didn't they. They know they can rest because we don't penetrate. They win it back and before we know it we are defending the edge of our area. It is very clear to see.
