Re: Liverpool Thread 2012
Now that it's on the shirt it's difficult to see anyone seriously suggesting taking it off in the future. I may be derided for this, but I actually think it's a good idea. Liverpool fans are mawkish to the point of parody, but they are entitled to feel an enduring sense of injustice at what happened at Hilsborough and this move is symbolic of their promise to never forget those dreadful events.
As to the design, I quite like it. The City kit with the collars circa 1979 is a particular favourite of mine and I certainly wouldn't be too disappointed if Nike were to base its design around that.
Liverpool's inevitable decline will not be arrested by this natty design, however. As long as their stadium also has a late seventies/early eighties retro feel to it, they will continue to fall further behind the likes of City. It's strange because I never used to hear any of their fans object to the way finances in football were organised a few seasons ago when they, and the rest of the 'big 4' that we seldom hear of anymore, were carving things up for themselves in their self-perpetuating cartel. Liveool supporters put me in mind of faded pop stars. Living off past glories they are unable to see that their time has passed. They sing the same songs to ever dwindling crowds before waking up one day and realising that the party's over. For them, that day hasn't quite arrived yet, but it's only a couple of seasons away. Perhaps then they will reflect upon the way they dismissed our lack of 'istree as not only wholly incorrect, but irrelevant in any event.
History, to use its correct spelling, is written by the victors. As I'm sure some of their older fans will remember.
