Liverpool Thread 2013/14 (continued)

I've done my share of PMSLing at them after they fucked the league up. They behaved, as a body of fans, like a bunch of cunts of the highest order when they thought they had won the league. They got their comeuppance and it couldn't have happened to a more deserving bunch, given the way they were.

I'm bound to say though that with the dawn of the new season it will in my view be time to move on. They will probably not challenge for the league, because playing in Europe will probably sort them out. They will be top 4 rivals, but not serious title contenders.

I think there is a wider issue, though about how Liverpool Football Club is perceived by fans of other clubs, ours included. The problem with the way they made so much of Hillsborough is that the 25th anniversary of Hillsborough will be followed by the 26th anniversary. To my mind there is a very real risk that Liverpool and their supporters will find out next season that they lost a lot of goodwill when they used - or were perceived as using - the memory of the 96 victims of a tragedy that should not have happened to build momentum for a title challenge.

I do not think it is a coincidence that we played them away on the weekend that fell closest to the 25th anniversary - after the Munich anniversary I think we are the one club whose respect on the anniversary of Hillsborough could be pretty much guaranteed. And nothing more needs to be said about how Liverpool's fans 'thanked' us on the day for that respect. It pains me to say it but if the same sort of tribute was paid next season I would be far less confident than I was this year about the reaction it would get from City. There was a fund of goodwill on City's part towards that club and I fear that they gambled it on a title challenge and lost.

I hope I am wrong about this. I really hope the City fan base (as a whole) is able to distinguish between on one hand the respect that should be shown for the fans who died at Hillsborough and the injustice their families have suffered, and on the other the derision that is entirely deserved by their supporter base (as a whole) for the way they acted in the last three months of last season. But I am distinctly worried that what has been for a while quite a warm and respectful relationship has been tarnished in a very significant way.

I think we will
look at the minutes silence for Munich during svens reign

We will always respect the fans who died at Hillsborough and their families, that goes without saying.I do think some of their fans and officials at that club need to have a long hard look at themselves though at what they are doing with the memory.

Prior to our game at Anfield this season i didn't feel a lot of animosity towards them. They were horrible shits in the seventies and eighties, easily as bad as the rags, but that was a long time ago.Our fall from grace and their dip from being a top club too recently meant we didn't really bother each other much. This season all that changed and unfortunately so did they, reverting back to the horrible shits they were years ago, from the gloating to the violence.Just to make their behaviour even more reprehensible they threw all our empathy and respect shown to them that day straight back into our faces and laughed in them.

To me now they are finished as a football club and i hope they never prosper or win another thing.Talking to a lot of other long standing Blues every one of them feel the same.

Great post. Their support has rightly lost a ot of respect here for the way they used Hillsborough and the premature nature of their celebrations. The unprovoked violent attacks were the worst thing, though. Most of us would continue to be able to make the distinction. I do worry about the rest who can't.

I think I'm correct in saying that if we had beaten Wigan if the FA cup the Liverpool game at Anfield would have had to be rearranged. Therefore we would have played them on much less emotive day weeks later.
But hey - who gives a shit now?
You are spot on with your post though. They really are a club and a set of fans who are extremely easy to strongly dislike.
How we won the title makes if that little bit sweeter for us and all the more unpalletable for the scousers.
Karma really is a woman! :-)

Throughout the title run-in I didn't meet one fan from another club that we went to home or away that didn't want us to beat Liverpool to the title!

Agreed. There are some fans resent us but on the whole most real football fans know our fanbase has suffered and remains grounded, plus our players are decent humble guys who show respect.

Not true, every neutral fan wanted Candlepool to win. It must be true, fat Sam said so.

IMO most non football fans wanted Loserpool to win it, but very few football fans did.
