By the way did you know Anfield is a former (temporary) home ground of the Rags? Friday 20th August 1971, League Division One... Man United played host to Arsenal.... at ANFIELD!

Apparently the rags were banned from using the swamp due to crowd disturbances and played this and one other 'home' game at Stokes Victoria Ground.

I think we were building the North Stand around this time- is that the reason they didnt use Maine Road?
Nah,

We told the ungrateful c**ts to fuck off.
(I hope)

Haha probably not because believe it or not we had a very close working relationship with them from manager level upwards. Joe Mercer was still in charge of us and Matt Busby had just stepped aside (again) and they were friends from way back, even our chairman and theirs had weekly chats apparently! Seems strange today but thats how it was back then apparently.

Scousers have never had a 60,000 crowd for a home league game EVER- their highest was 58,757 in 1950 for a league game against Chelsea. Highest at Anfield was 61,905 for a FA Cup match against Wolves in 1952.

They won hardly anything before Shankly came on the scene, including not winning the FA Cup until 1965!

They hate ANYONE winning anything- including us.

The ground has no long term plan and is constructed piece-meal... like the team. Best chance for future glories is the league cup.

WE ARE WHAT THEY ASPIRE TO BE.... now where have i heard that before?

Its worth pointing out to the clowns that we had won a European trophy before they did .

If I remember rightly they had to play a certain distance away from the swamp. 35 miles or something like that.

The main reason that they have never topped 60,000 for a league game is that Everton were always the bigger club pre Shankly.

They've never averaged 50,000 for a league season even in the 70s & 80s when Anfield held 54,000.

They've only committed to expanding the Main Stand currently and are adopting a wait and see approach to the Anfield Road End
dependant on whether they can fill the stadium. In that respect they are similar to us with the North Stand.

Currently their match going support potential is probably similar to ours. Given all their 'istory and the fact that they weren't playing
in the third tier 15 years ago whilst sharing a city with a club doing the treble that's actually pretty poor.

The upside in our support is enormous given sustained success, theirs isn't. The truth is they are a fading club, in a fading city.
They will end up like Aston Villa. Villa were still England's most successful club up right up until the Second World War in terms of
honours won but today who really gives a shit?

Their own history is an interesting one for those that don't know it. Everton were the original tenants of Anfield but chairman John Houlding fell out with the rest of the board over his desire to increase his brewing profits by exclusively selling his products inside the ground. His response to a rebuff from the rest of his directors was to get his friends to massively increase the rent on a piece of ground required for access to Anfield, thereby forcing Everton out. Having done that, he set up Liverpool FC, got his cheque book out and bought a new team, mainly from Scotland.

Many of their players also took a bribe from the rags to throw a game in 1915, when the rags were fighting relegation. Not a history I'd be proud of.
