Whilst wading through the usual bile, then it’s mad just how many people don’t seem to rate Gerrard that highly. Thinly veiled criticism aimed at players who show loyalty to the one club throughout their career is also a bit weird (isn’t that what 99% of supporters of any club wants to see with their players? Especially in these unprecedented days where money really does talk).

Not sure if it’s partly an England thing – as his performances for them even in his pomp possibly didn’t match those in a Liverpool shirt (John Barnes was probably the same - arguably to an even greater extent actually).

Gerrard was one of the few players out there who (in his prime at least) could probably play to a high level in almost any position on the pitch. For me, then he was at his very best playing in the number ‘ten’ role about 2008-2009, where his energy, ability to create openings, telepathic understanding with Torres and eye for a goal meant he was almost unplayable at times.

No doubt that his powers have been on the wane over the last couple of years but, for years, he carried Liverpool almost single handedly – if anyone was going to dig us out of a hole then odds on it would be Steven Gerrard.

He’s never been perfect by any means – there’s definitely a level of insecurity and probably some traits about still needing to be THE man in there somewhere – which may have influenced his decision to leave now, who knows. He arguably also didn’t have the required discipline to be a really top class central midfielder when playing as part of a two. One of a dying breed of players who still wears the (clichéd) ‘heart on his sleeve’ though – which, again, is surely what supporters of any club want to see in their players. It MATTERS to him.

If people really are offended by the coverage that his last game at Anfield’s likely to get, then the solution is easy – don’t watch / listen to it. It really is that straightforward.

Hoping it’s going to be a decent send-off anyway and I’ll certainly miss him once he’s gone.

Up the reds!

But he didn't did he ?
If the gangsters he was in tow with hadn't stopped him he would have wont the league this year.
This 100% why do people buy into the loyalty bollox .Gerrard was forced to stay at liverpool.
No disputing he has had a very good career tho.
Love him or hate him the game of football looses another character.
When Rooney and Terry pack up who are going go be the pantomime villains???

Good post. I'd take issue with the loyalty thing because it looked like he was definitely on his way to Chelsea plus he hasn't always behaved particularly well off the field, while on it he has been known to have a proper nasty streak at times.

Putting that to one side though, I agree that he has carried Liverpool in many games throughout his career. There will be plenty of other higher profile matches but speaking from experience of one match I was present at, it was when you were having that troublesome season - Rafa's last as manager in 2009-10 - and you were struggling to replicate anything like the form that almost won you the league the season before. It was around November time and we were playing you at Anfield. The match ended in a 2-2 draw but I recall vividly with around 20 minutes to go that Gerrard was at the centre of everything, pulling all the strings whenever you attacked. I thought Liverpool were generally quite poor that day but Gerrard was the exception.

While he's been a fantastic player for Liverpool down the years, I think the level of media coverage regarding his impending departure has in part been influenced by who he plays for. Liverpool and United are the 2 biggest media darlings in the country on account of them having the most fans so it's inevitable that this will get that bit more coverage. It is what it is basically but I can understand why some of our lot are a bit miffed by it. Not your fault though lol. Enjoy tomorrow.

Lampard? Who does he play for? Be surprised if he even gets a mention next weekend as the media has to play to it's main revenue - the armchair hoards.

Yes, it will - I'll put my house on it not getting as much coverage even though they've both had a great career.

It's because, despite much self-delusion from Liverpool fans and the media that cater to them, he was never really in the highest brackets. He wasn't an average player but nowhere near a great.

Let me show you what I mean. Take Gerrard and give him the exact same everything - the exact same performances against the exact same teams in every game. But make him move clubs once every 3 years. Would he be remembered as one of the great midfielders? No.

As always with you pricks, sentimentality is overruling any logical position that you might hold.

Gerrard has never been in even the top 5 players in the world. He often had purple patches when people like Alonso and Torres, people who WERE world class for a period, made them look good. He's a scouse Stephen Ireland.

No doubt that his powers have been on the wane over the last couple of years but, for years, he carried Liverpool almost single handedly – if anyone was going to dig us out of a hole then odds on it would be Steven Gerrard.

This is more scouse bollocks. He dragged you out of the shit because he was the only half decent player you had much of the time. You didn't let anybody else drag you out of the shit because you never spent well because you had Gerrard as a fallback.

Hes never been perfect by any means – there’s definitely a level of insecurity and probably some traits about still needing to be THE man in there somewhere – which may have influenced his decision to leave now, who knows. So?

It mattered to Paul Dickov but he was still wank. Yaya Toure and people like Fernando Torres didn't give even an ounce of a shit yet were great players.

I don't want to go to a game and watch 11 players "just like me". I'm surrounded by 45,000 people who think just like me, I expect the players on the pitch to be controlled athletes who aren't headless chickens at the first sign of pressure.

Gerrard is one of those people who was a good player and could have been a great player at any other club but Liverpool who infected him with their ridiculous notions on what "passion" is (yeah, coordinated singing, how passionate), a ridiculous victim complex and a ridiculous and consistently failure to be even partially relevant in English football for the past decade.

Gerrard and his good but could have been great if not for a terrible and almost psychotically self-obsessed mentality is absolutely the perfect mascot for Liverpool FC. Now that he's off to shake his arse to try and attract some American dollars despite his obvious-to-everybody stage of being past it is also a wonderful analogy for the state of Liverpool FC.

No wonder you people are a laughing stock. When people laugh at you more than Leeds then you'd think that brain cell that I'm sure you could get together to pool should maybe think "wait, have we become a parody?"

Don't like the Tory Government? Then don't read any newspapers for the next 5 years. Or turn on any TV, or visit any internet sites or talk to pretty much anybody in the world.

Yeah that seems like a solution.

I see no difference between what he's done for Liverpool & what Milner has done for us, save for Stevie did it for them longer.

To continue the parallel, Stevie's best seasons came as a winger. He couldn't shift Alonso, Mascherano, Hamann, Gary McAllister etc out of the middle and his best season was him pinging balls into Torres or cutting inside from the wing and playing off Torres.

He desperately wanted to be "the man" in the middle, but never did anything special from that position. See the parallel with Jimmy here?

I still say that if Rodgers had of had the balls to bench Gerrard from the infamous "Pirlo role" lol, Liverpool would have beaten us to the title by a few points. He was shocking against Chelsea in a game where he should have had the experience to slow the tempo and against Palace it was an even bigger joke for them. In fact, last season Henderson was a bigger influence all season than Stevie G.

The slip last season. The big red card this year. The infamous backpass a few years earlier. He's been at the centre of several controversial flashpoints and always on the losing end of these. Liverpool fans loved the whole "aww poor Stevie" stuff but I call bullshit and am stunned he was never investigated. But then again, England captains live by a different set of rules.

Liverpool fans desperately want the history of the chelsea move expunged from memory, but we all remember his end of season comments where it looked like he was gone. He never did walk alone however, he had the local goons right behind him over his shoulder in his ear far too often.

I spent an evening about 10 years back with a fairly high profile former ex of his and she didn't have much good to say about him.
