Re: The Red Lion Pub Team (Liverpool) Thread 2014/15
Its all about identifying the right player and getting the right timing. Not perhaps a Sanchez or a Costa but tell me really, you honestly think you couldn't have pulled off a Cavani? So many factors could have contributed to it if you would have pursued him; Cavani personally being unhappy with his role at PSG, PSG's FFP compulsions, the prospect of recovering the money they paid for Luiz within the same window and not to mention him being an almost identical replacement for Suarez (apart from their nationality, of course) . How did you think we landed Aguero? The money offered to Atletico was too big to refuse and Aguero saw the chance to play in the Premier League. These things could have also swayed Cavani your way.
And perhaps, you couldn't have bought both a forward and a defensive midfielder in one window but if you would have prioritized Cavani and been inside the top 4 in the League and still be playing in the Champions League then who knows, you could have been able to attract that midfielder in January for a little less than the exorbitant price which would have been demanded otherwise.
On a side note, you really shouldn't have let Agger go or been so stubborn with Sunderland over Borini. IMO, you've lost the plot this season off the field more than on it!

After a team like ourselves or Spurs sell a Suarez or Bale, the mantra is that you go for quality over quantity. So far, so good. Now here's the question I've been wondering about.
Can a team like Liverpool even attract a quality player at the top end of the market? We've been unable to do Costa and Sanchez recently.
Maybe we should've bought a 30-40M attacker and a 30-40M defensive all-action midfielder, but 1. Were any available at that price in this market? 2. Would they want to come? and 3. Could we have paid the wages?
I think the issue is not so much quality over the quantity. The issue is that the team has a shocking scouting system and our academy is not producing (it looked promising last season with Sterling, Flanagan and Suso). The transfer committee either needs to be fired or ownership/fans need to readjust expectations and be willing to tolerate seasons like this with the hope of challenging for Europe in seasons when the signings supposedly come to fruition.
