Liverpool thread 2017/18

Fans' behaviour, to the extent that it was relevant at all, made the job of the police, in the crush outside Leppings Lane turnstiles, harder than it needed to be. But it didn't cause the disaster any more than the sunny day that encouraged people to linger outside the stadium as kick off approached. I held those views then, I hold them now. I have never, since hearing the Taylor evidence unfold, offered any other interpretation in public or private

From one of the officer's who spread the rumours of drunken, ticketless fans in the first place.

I have it from a reliable source (who I have absolutely no reason to disbelieve) that the volume of supporters outside the ground just before KO was a factor, and that alcohol did play its part. How great a factor that was is debatable, but certainly a factor in the decision making process of many of the officers on duty at than match.

Because the police were already heavily under scrutiny (and rightly so), the best course of action at the enquiry was for the police to take it on the chin, as it would look considerably worse for them if they tried to apportion some of the blame to a minority of Liverpool fans for what happened (like they initially tried to).

The victims and the families of the victims paid the ultimate price in all this. The police eventually (rightly or wrongly) took all of the blame, and as far as that is concerned, the whole thing has been put to bed from a legal and financial stand point.

Fans being drunk and jibbing in was par for the course in the 80s. The police knew what to expect and they fucked it up. I have no problem accepting that Hillsbrough was not Liverpool fans fault.

Like another poster said, there are many many things that can be said about them. It’s unnecessary to raise hillsborough and it’s wrong to lay the blame at their door for it.

The problem I have is when nothing else is ever their fault either.

Reliable sources may like to ask themselves why it all went wrong in the '89 semi but not the '88 semi.
I was once chatting to the accountant at a company I was visiting, a Liverpool season ticket holder, who had been at that match, but had been in the seats ABOVE the terracing, and had witnessed it all. This was only 3 or 4 months after it happened, and he was still traumatised by the events that had taken place.

Interestingly, he told me that the previous year, when Livepool had been there for another semi, he had been standing in that central area. About 5 minutes into the match there was a surge forward and a lot of supporters were crushed against the barriers, which he was standing in front of. He vowed then that if they ever went to Hiilsborough again, he would go in the seats. Apparently , a lot of supporters were allowed in to the ground to alleviate the queueing outside! Fortunately, no one was badly hurt, but, obviously, lessons on crowd control were not learned, leading to those tragic events 12 months later.

Fair point. And I remember a similar incident at the spurs v wolves semi final in '81.

Firmino at the doctors today
Once his flu is confirmed UEFA will have no option but to replay it
Hang on, this is starting to look suspiciously like there is a UEFA conspiracy against Liverpool. If it is confirmed that Firmino has flu then I'd be very disappointed if they were required to play a replay. Surely they would just give Liverpool the trophy? They are the best team in Europe after all.

OED announce a couple of new dictionary entries for 2019:

RAMOSED (ra’mosed) Benefitting from a despicable act. I.e you see an old lady drop her scratch card, you pick it up and win a tenner.

KARIUSING (kar’e’using) Pathetic and shameless attempt to avoid responsibility I.e you fart and blame the dog.
