I watched them against Brighton and they still have plenty of weaknesses in defence.VVD has made a big difference but the organisation and solidity still isnt what it could be.They are also nothing more than average in the centre of the park.
Easier said than done, but nullify the attacking threat and/or keep them quiet when they come flying out of the blocks and they resort to being quite an ordinary team.

They are a 30 minute team in which they try to blow you away.

Keep them at bay during that time and as the game goes on and their fitness levels suffer, they dont offer much and they can be beaten quite easily imo.

That's the way i see it too, although the media would have you believe something very different.

Hate these ****s. I’m really worried they’re going to do it. Not because their squad is as the city squad but because they have everyone on their side. The media, the referees, and scudimore are desperate for the scousers to win the league.
I’d rather win fair and square than win by cheating. They know the scousers aren’t good enough to win on their own so they’re giving them as much support as possible. Makes me sick to my stomach. I hope Pep calls out the referees.

They are being more pragmatic this season trying to go for the more solid performances rather than free scoring. The test will come later in the season with injuries etc and against better teams.

It’s not just Van Dyke that’s made a difference, although along with Mane, he is the player I’d most like to see out of action for an extended period. Gomez and Terrence Trent-Darby now afford them some serious pace at the back, and Allison is light years ahead of either of the clowns they had in goal last season. Palace and Brighton are exactly the types of teams who’ve been able to cause the dippers problems in the last couple of seasons, by pinging it over the demented press and having powerful runners like Zaha bear down on exposed defenders. I watched the Palace game, and VVD and Gomez won every challenge, every foot race and virtually every header. That they’ve kept 3 clean sheets and yielded very few chances, is no surprise.

And as regards the midfield’s lack of top drawer creativity, they simply don’t need it. Milner, Henderson, Keita, Wijnaldum et al, are there to harangue and harry the opposition like rabid dogs and turn the ball over, whilst still being good enough to then quickly release the trio up front who do all the damage. The dippers aren’t really a counterattacking team IMO, but rather one that presses insanely in and around the halfway line, so that they’re seldom exposed themselves at one end, but leave Mane, Salah and Firmino a decent amount of space to operate in ahead of them. It’s no surprise that they beat us 3 times last year (shit referees or not), because our possession game high up the pitch is perfect for them. I don’t think we can expect them to drop many points against non top 6 opposition like they’ve done in the past, and we can ill afford the kind of sloppy performance we served up yesterday. They’ll push us all the way, despite the complacent piss taking from many on this thread

So far, the buswreckers have played a recently promoted team in Brighton, a team, which struggles every season, Crystal Palace, and West Ham, who were a fucking shambles when the two met on opening day.

We’ve played Huddersfield, tipped by many to be relegated, and Arsenal and Wolves, who have both been suggested as top six, even top four by some.

Let them have their day in the sun. I have faith that Pep will get it right.

Great assessment. I am not sure why so many Blues dismiss them so readily. They have been gradually getting stronger the last few years and have obviously decided to really try and step up to the next level with their huge investment. We saw yesterday how even a limited team like Wolves with a couple of skilful players with pace can get in behind us. If that was Mane and Salah we would have been two or three goals down.

We are tailor made for their system which is why we lost three of the last four head to heads. It is a bit frustrating a top coach like Pep can't seem to solve the conundrum they pose.

This. We’re all a million miles away from winning the title yet.
