Kompany didn't play much in the first half of last season and we did pretty well. He barely played during our run of 18 consecutive wins in 17/18 when Otamendi was our best defender. Laporte is our best defender after Kompany's retirement anyway and widely recognised as one of the best left-footed CBs in the world, so the analogy with VVD is perfectly valid.

I totally agree with you as far technical ability is concerned. But we can't underestimate Vinny's other more "intangible" qualities. On-field leadership is something we've sorely missed this season. Kevin has been by far our most vocal player in recent games. Silva, Fernandino are way too "nice" for my liking. I think Laporte may be too. If you watch Liverpool, most of their defensive work is done by their front 6. VVD doesn't really do that much defending. What he does is to mop up any thing that bypasses their midfield but spends most of the time marshalling the other defensive players while Henderson looks after the rest of their players. Kompany, very much like John Terry, was a proper general and his influence on the field made sure that everyone stuck to their tasks from the first to the last whistle.
Yeah, they are all talking up the points total too.
If they do lose a few games towards the end of the season and don't now beat our points record after all the hype, it will be a lovely finish to the season regardless of their tainted title win.
Don't forget they have istreee for this.Oh dear. I can see dropped points on the horizon.
Can you imagine the meltdown if they suddenly lost a few games and somehow we closed the gap to 6 points with us to play them?
I just had this overwhelming feeling of them celebrating way too soon, even we didn't start singing we're going to win the league in February and we was way ahead then.
But them singing they're gonna win the league in January....oh dear.
Quadruple? If the Blades win today, Liverpool would have to do something they haven’t yet done this season (lose) to make that game at the Etihad continue to be relevant. After the trip to Wolves on Thursday, the fixture list gets a lot easier for the next two months, which is surely another part of the Worldwide Scouse Conspiracy so many here seem to buy into.
It’s a distinct possibility we’ll be celebrating winning the league properly, at Anfield, after beating Palace two weeks before playing at City. If all of this were to come off, Klopp could very well choose to run out the kids against you lot, particularly if the Quadruple is still on by then.
How much money did they spend to amass such an impressive trophy haul? You've won 1 trophy & 2 int'l Charity Shields. In a decade. Calm down
Quadruple?
As the Spartan might reply " IF "Imagine if we win both domestic cups and the champions league? A double a treble and a treble over 3 years will dwarf you winning the league ably assisted by the PIGMOl guys and Stockley Park. You’ll have had your best season since last year and still achieved less than us. Not saying it will happen but it’s as possible as your Quadruple. Be even sweeter if we beat you in all 3 finals
Just watched it about 5 times and I cannot really see what else Gomez could do really, lot of people in the box ball comes in they are all fighting for a space. Do you want him to move out of the way in a polite manner ?I've only just got round to watching the goals from the game on Sunday. I was surprised that Maquire wasn't able to get up and challenge VVD for the first goal until I watched the reverse angle which shows Gomez (I think) clearly pushing/blocking Maguire in the back, this created the free header for VVD.
Deffo something to look out for as VVD does seem to get quite a few free headers in that position is it 5 headed goals this season?
It looked like a predetermined move, and looks like another example of the systematic cheating that they do.
I know a lot of clubs do blocking runs in the box, but this was pretty clear cut and I'm (not) surprised it wasn't looked at by VAR.
Not sure what your point is: that we haven't been seriously hurt by Laporte's long absence or that Liverpool wouldn't miss VVD so much? Can't agree on both counts. With VVD they didn't keep a clean sheet in 12 consecutive league games. Imagine Liverpool without him: apart from him being world class, their confidence will drop and the confidence of the opposition will increase. There isn't really much to debate imo.
But we had Laporte, Otamendi, Stones and Garcia and Double barrel(forgot his name for the moment)-it was unfortunate that we lost 2 of these through injury and the rest lost form. just how many high class CBs a club can have with only 2 playing each game is questionable. With hindsight we could do with another but if Laporte had not been injured for so long then things would have very different, like Ferny playing in his favoured position.I'm not disagreeing with you in any way. My point, in a nutshell, is that probably wouldn't have missed Laporte as much as we have if Kompany (or his replacement) was around. Not replacing him was a huge mistake.
There's a general feeling that our defense can now be gotten at. I don't remember that ever being the case when Vinny was around. He could play with freaking James Tomkins and he'd make him look like a superstar.
fair enough, I may be laughing too if the roles were reversed so I’m not going to be a hypocrite but the truth is you only get into that competition by winning the champions league.
you mean to say there’s no significance in that? You wouldn’t love city to be in that competition because of what it implies?
2 teams worse than championship level means you shouldn't count it as a trohy, that is more of a pre-season game, but you believe it makes you the best club in the world, excuse us whilst we laugh at it,not one blue would be counting it,neither would the club, our chairman said 3 plus 1 last season, the one being the community shield and he is right, what does what it implies even mean,it is what it is in fact,a big team shouldn't be padding things out by counting that tattfair enough, I may be laughing too if the roles were reversed so I’m not going to be a hypocrite but the truth is you only get into that competition by winning the champions league.

Indeed. And you only get into the Champions League by being cha......oh.fair enough, I may be laughing too if the roles were reversed so I’m not going to be a hypocrite but the truth is you only get into that competition by winning the champions league.
The shit teams from Middle East and South America don’t have to win CLfair enough, I may be laughing too if the roles were reversed so I’m not going to be a hypocrite but the truth is you only get into that competition by winning the champions league.
